The Amazon best-seller No Logo was penned, ironically, by anti-capitalist activist Naomi Klein. Asked during a Big Think interview why she became involved in politics, the Canadian journalist replied:

“There was a moment where I became involved in politics as a university student, and that was a very political school shooting. A man named Mark Lepine who had tried to get into this school but he hadn’t…decided it was because there was affirmative action for women, so he went into the engineering department and he separated the men from the women and said, ‘You’re all a bunch of f-ing feminists,’ and killed 14 women…this was an amazing political awakening for a lot of women because the politics were just so clear, and we felt really vulnerable as women in universities at that point.”

It is disconcerting to find Ms. Klein, who traces her debut in politics to the slaughter of women, sits on the Board of Advisors of Free Gaza, a pro-Hamas organization. Since the terrorist attempts to run the Israeli defense blockade, Klein has been vociferous in her condemnation of Israel – true to the self-hatred that prompted her previous declaration:

“Some Jews even think we get one get-away-with-genocide-free-card.”

Klein, an investigative journalist, cannot be ignorant of Hamas-encouraged Honor Killings, imposition of Islamic burqa tent-wear, death-threats to women in the media who broadcast without hijab, and even the outlawing of women riding motorcycles ( greatly restricting independent transportation in the territory.)

Why would a self-proclaimed feminist align herself with Hamas’s mission to eradicate Israel, where women enjoy nearly total freedom, to replace it with a misogynist gulag defined by its physical and psychological dehumanization of women?

Klein’s apparent hypocrisy highlights a core element of leftist behavior – the simultaneous embracing of persons and movements that appear, superficially, to be at utter variance with one another’s stated goals.

One might assert that Radical Son, the autobiographical account of David Horowitz’s exodus from Marxism, chronicles his gradual comprehension of precisely this tendency.

Horowitz’s “moment of truth,” came when he witnessed that revolutionaries with whom he had spent his entire life fighting for oppressed individuals were totally devoid of concern for Betty Van Patter when she was killed by her employers, the Black Panthers.

On Tuesday, June 1st, The Israel Project hosted Israeli Prime Minister’s Spokesman, Mark Regev for a conference call during which the Spokesman updated journalists on the attacks on Israel by “humanitarians” bringing aid to Gaza.

“The Israel Project is an international nonprofit organization devoted to educating the press and the public about Israel while promoting security, freedom and peace. The Israel Project provides journalists, leaders and opinion-makers accurate information about Israel. The Israel Project is not related to any government or government agency.”

Mr. Regev began his remarks by clarifying that the blockade established by Israel to prevent access to Gaza is in complete conformity with international law. In particular, the existence of the blockade is clearly publicized by Israel and was established for the explicit and legitimate purpose of preventing munitions and terrorists from fortifying the war against Israel.

The Prime Minister’s Spokesman insisted repeatedly:

“The blockade is a matter of life and death for the people of Israel. Without this blockade, long-reaching, more sophisticated rockets provided by Iran and Syria will reach major cities in Israel.”

Mr. Regev clarified that over 100 trucks carry humanitarian supplies daily to the people of Gaza and that describing the situation in Gaza as a “humanitarian crisis” is a gross exaggeration.

Above all, the Spokesman wanted to emphasize that the violence and loss of life, while regretted and acknowledged by Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, are the sole responsibility of those who claimed to be humanitarian activists.

“Israel announced for days that the convoy, as all ships headed for Gaza, would be rerouted to the Israeli ports for inspection. The ship captains were told to divert their trajectories and five of the six did so. It was only the last ship that continued its course. Commandos were sent to the ships by the IDF to bring the boats with “maximum restraint,” to port so they could be inspected.

Israel promised the activists that, once screened, all appropriate supplies would reach the people of Gaza. Egypt also offered to serve as channel for the charitable donations, but the Marmara refused to comply and attacked the Israeli sailors with deadly force, necessitating the shooting of several activists.”

It is clear that the ultimate goal of the anti-Israelis is the “breaking of the blockade.” Regev explained the sheer hypocrisy of those calling themselves “Human Rights Activists,” when they do not speak out for the violated rights of Israeli citizens who have been targeted by over 7000 rockets since Gaza was traded to the Jordanian Arabs to try to encourage them to stop bombing innocent civilians. Most of all, it is crucial to note that, under Hamas, the people of Gaza are subject to:

“A Taliban-like theocracy in which gays, Christians, and women who wish to dress in a modern way in public are oppressed and punished. If the “human rights activists” were so worried about ending oppression, why do they run to embrace and have their pictures taken with the heads of Hamas in Gaza who are subjecting their people to this life-style that violates human rights.”

Mr. Regev stated that Israel must be allowed to protect itself and that universal demands that Her actions in this matter be the subject of an external inquiry show that Israel is held to a standard that is never applied to other nations who use force, and more force, to protect themselves. ‘

The Questions and Answers included a request for a statement of how Israel will handle future attempts to run the blockade. Regev replied that ships attempting to enter Gaza will be met with the same process, redirection to a port where the cargo will be searched to ascertain if there are materials harmful to Israel.

The final remarks by Mr. Regev underlined the seriousness of the fight in which Isreal is engaged. This is not theory, but a fight for existence. The recent UN resolution for a “nuclear free Middle East,” seeks, in fact, the disarmement of Israel, not the prevention of a nuclear Iran.

“Benjamin Netanyahu has called the attainment of nuclear weapons by Iran a pivot in history – the marriage of Islamic extremism, of religious fanaticism with nuclear weapons. Will these messianic regimes refrain from using these warheads, as do free societies who possess them now? Will Al Qaeda not use these weapons once they own them?”

Mr. Regev stated that Israelis are aware of their global condemnation, but that they reject all attempts to attribute responsibility to anyone but the real perpetrators, those who attacked the IDF soldiers who were simply protecting their besieged country.

An emergency session of the UN Security Council will convene in New York City this afternoon, no doubt to condemn Israel as quickly as possible.

Where does one begin, in trying to make sense of the mutterings of former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who put her rabidly anti-Israel, anti-American sentiments on display last night in an interview with Amy Goodman, the hardcore radical who hosts the leftist forum Democracy Now?

McKinney recently returned to the U.S. from the Middle East, where, at the request of her friends at Free Gaza–a coalition of anti-Israel groups whose stated aim is to draw attention to the Jewish state’s “transgressions” against Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other such terrorist organizations–she and a small band of 20 fellow activists attempted to sail through an Israeli naval blockade of the Gaza region.

In her interview with Goodman, McKinney offered a moving yet totally fictional account of a peaceful Gazan populace that was being systematically starved and abused by the Israeli military’s blockade of its (Hamas-ruled) territory. This blockade, said McKinney, constitutes “a gross injustice that is being carried out every day” in violation of “the human rights of the Palestinian people.” “Of course the world saw Operation Cast Lead [Israel’s bombardment of Hamas strongholds that began last December],” McKinney elaborated, “where the United States-supplied F-16s, white phosphorus, depleted uranium, cluster bombs … were rained down on the defenseless people of Gaza,” resulting in their “complete and utter devastation.”

McKinney made no mention of the fact that Operation Cast Lead was carried out in an effort to thwart the ceaseless barrage of rockets that Hamas and its terrorist comrades had been launching with impunity into southern Israel for many months.

Free Gaza, the coalition under whose auspices McKinney made her trek to Gaza, includes, as one of its member organizations, the International Solidarity Movement — a terrorist-sympathizing group that openly cooperates with Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and other groups whose sole aim is the complete destruction of the State of Israel.

What Free Gaza wanted from McKinney and her entourage was to have them try to sail through Israel’s naval blockade to deliver “humanitarian supplies,” thereby drawing world attention to a supposed oppressor’s brutal tactics of subjugation (or, to paraphrase Orwell’s sheep in Animal Farm, “Palestine gooood, Israel baaaad“). This was the second time that McKinney has attempted to do this; on neither occasion did her stunts gain much traction in the media.

The Israelis seized McKinney’s ship after it ignored radio transmissions ordering it to turn around, and announced that they would free the crew and passengers after processing them. That could have been the end of it. But, true to form, McKinney and her cohorts quickly became belligerent. When they refused to sign Israeli deportation forms, they were arrested and held in jail until they could be formally deported by an Israeli judge.

“The Israelis hijacked us because we wanted to give crayons to the children of Gaza,” was how McKinney characterized the incident.

Interesting assessment, but don’t spend too much time trying to understand it. It really isn’t worth the effort. Amy Goodman, for one, accepted it without question.

Incidentally, McKinney will be happy to know that the Israelis have generously offered to deliver any crayons that they find on the ship to Hamas for distribution.
