A Soundbite (on Howard Zinn) Heard Round the World

2010 February 12

I knew when I responded to an NPR request for a comment on the late, unlamented Howard Zinn that I was asking for trouble — from the anti-American, Marxoid, neo-Communist left.  But I did it anyway because Howard Zinn’s life was so dedicated to evil and specifically to the support of mass murderers and self-declared enemies of his country, that someone with a brain unfogged by leftwing claptrap had to do it. As it turned out, if I had not contributed my soundbite it would have been left to depraved radicals — in this case Noam Chomsky and Julian Bond — to promote Zinn’s malevolent work to an NPR audience of millions. read more…

The Closing of the Liberal Mind: TNR Attacks Thomas Sowell

2010 February 10

Despite the fact that in an act of petty malice and politically-motivated spite,  Leon Wieseltier has banned me (or mention of my work) from The New Republic for twenty-five years, I have always regarded the literary pages that he edits as the best “back of the book” section in the opinion magazine business. No more.

The current issue of The New Republic contains a vapid, mean-spirited, and indefensible attack on one of the most important intellectual figures of our time. Alan Wolfe’s review of Thomas Sowell’s new book, Intellectuals and Society, is not even a review. Not a single idea presented in the book is addressed in Wolfe’s text, which is simply a lengthy ad hominem attack on Sowell that displays astounding ignorance of both Sowell and his important intellectual oeuvre. read more…

The Conservative Awakening

2010 February 9

I’ve been reading — and worse — listening to leftwing pundits dump on the Conservative Awakening and dismiss it as a “media event.” When 10,000 let alone 100,000 let alone a reported million conservatives — people who are allergic to collective action and despise demonstrations — march on Washington as they did on 9/12 something very serious is going on; I would say a conservative equivalent to the 1960s.

I just came from an event in St. Louis at which Glenn Beck spoke in a sports arena to 11,000 Tea Partiers who paid $20 a head to hear him give a sermon in the Church of American Patriotism, specifically a church whose sacred texts were the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, the objects of the evening’s worship. read more…

We Might Let Horowitz Appear, If He Has Three Keepers

2010 February 8

Has this become the new face of Catholic higher education?

St. Louis University, a Catholic institution, continues on a path designed to made it a laughingstock in the annals of academic freedom, maintaining its ban on yours truly while proclaiming its commitment to intellectual diversity and… academic freedom.

From Inside Higher Ed:

David Horowitz can’t seem to get into Saint Louis University no matter how hard he tries. read more…

Deranged Leftwinger at Daily Beast

2010 February 4

Have you noticed that the further leftists travel off the deep end the more they perceive everyone else to be crazy? DailyKos just conducted a poll to underpin Markos Moulitsas’ new book describing Republicans as America’s Taliban — which is rich, considering it’s leftists like Moulitsas who are doing everything in their power to help the Taliban and other Islamic Nazis to win their war against the West. read more…

The Zinnians, the Neo-Communists, and Us

2010 February 3

The objective of the Zinnians, the Neo-Communists of today, and the Old Left Communists of 70 years ago is identical and summarized in this image.

The death of Howard Zinn has brought the neo-Communists out of the woodwork, the latest example being Scott McLemee’s tribute to Zinn (and casual smearing of anti-Comunists like Ron Radosh) in the current issue of InsideHigherEd.com. I have noted in the past that while we have terms like neo-liberal and neo-conservative and neo-fascist, there is no term for neo-communists — or rather there is a term but thanks to the successful efforts of the neo-communist left anyone who uses such a term is immediately labeled a McCarthyite. It’s time for a change. read more…

A Wicked Man? No, a Fool with Wicked Ideas

2010 January 31

I’ve been uncomfortable with one characterization in my blog on Howard Zinn, and have decided I want to correct and will ask our editor David Swindle to do so in the original text. This brief blog is by way of explanation. I’m uncomfortable with calling Zinn a “wicked man” and thereby putting him in the same category with child molesters such as Daniel Ortega and mass murderers like Stalin and Pot, though Zinn actively abetted and supported all three. Howard Zinn was a fool with wicked ideas and wicked allegiances which continued to his last breath.

Spitting on Howard Zinn’s Grave?

2010 January 30

The other day a reporter from NPR called me and asked me for my comments on the death of the lifelong Stalinist and propagandist Howard Zinn. I was a little reluctant because I knew that whatever I said, legions of unscrupulous myrmidons on the left would jump on it and say I had spit on Zinn’s grave. I also knew that while I was interviewed for ten minutes, out of what I said only a 20 second sound-bite would make it onto the air. I don’t begrudge NPR this selection. That’s what their obit was and would have to be, a collection of sound-bites.

Sure enough the bottom-feeders at FAIR pounced on my bite and accused me of spitting on Zinn’s grave. So here’s what I said that was cut from the interview. I’m not putting quotes around it because it’s from memory, but it’s pretty close to some of my remarks and captures the sense of others:  No one should celebrate the death of another human being unless they are child-molesters or murderers. Howard Zinn lived to a ripe old age (87), and bad human being that he was, I wouldn’t begrudge him an extra few years; he’s done about as much damage as he could. read more…

Class Warfare Entrenched: Indoctrination in Higher Education

2010 January 29

From Accuracy in Academia:

In Boston, an English professor is trying to sell his class on society’s collective guilt when said students are already believers in personal responsibility. “We must encourage students to access the antagonist class positions of texts in order to demonstrate how the oppositional voices contained in them identify evidence of class struggle,” Christopher Craig writes in the December 2009 issue of Radical Teacher, “a socialist, feminist and anti-racist journal on the theory and practice of teaching.” “Through this critical process, we can show how the values and interests of the dominant class are not universal but repressive, intended to keep the power relations between the ruling and working class one-sided.” read more…

State of the Union: “Woe to the People Whose Leader Has No Teacher”

2010 January 28

Historically, State of the Union speeches leave no trace. Their impact on presidential approval ratings is nil. Their utility, therefore,  is in what they reflect about the presidential character and the presidential course. Last night President Obama gave a speech that was at times quite eloquent, and on occasion rhetorically empty. But at all times it was the speech of a man who is deeply partisan and dangerously arrogant and is determined to stay a course which has already damaged his party, weakened his country at home and exposed it to attack from abroad. read more…
