“The surge has failed.”
“The war is lost.”
“American citizens who tour the Capitol building during the summertime stink!”
“No one has talked about reconciliation.”
Senate majority leader Harry Reid is a prime example of a corrupt career politician whose lies are so demonstrably false he believes no one will call him on them. Guess again, Harry!
This week during President Obama’s healthcare summit Reid inaccurately claimed,

John McCain made a pretty good appearance on Good Morning America while being challenged by George Stephanopoulos on policy. He warned of the “cataclysmic” consequences of pursuing ObamaCare through reconciliation, a very clear signal to Harry Reid that Republicans plan to fight it every step of the way. But even putting aside process, McCain reinforces the points made yesterday by himself and his colleagues about the fantasy mathematics employed by Democrats in pushing their bill, calling it “Bernie Madoff accounting” (via Instapundit):

Perhaps Barack Obama picked Andy Stern for his bipartisan commission on the federal deficit just to get Stern out of the White House. After all, Obama may be getting tired of Stern’s weekly visits, but that hardly qualifies the SEIU chief to sit on a panel to make hard choices on federal budgeting. And with Stern on the panel, we can already guess how many job-cutting initiatives this panel will produce:
Honeywell International Inc. Chief Executive Officer David Cote and former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Alice Rivlin were named by President Barack Obama today to serve on a commission on cutting the federal deficit. The president also appointed Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, and former Young & Rubicam Brands CEO Ann Fudge for the panel, to serve on the panel. …

White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers will step down next month and be replaced by Julianna Smoot, the chief fundraiser for the Obama presidential campaign, I’ve learned.
Rogers will stay to work with Smoot to make sure of a smooth transition. I was told. Smoot was one of the first hires of the Obama presidential campaign. Her ability to raise millions for Obama in the first quarter of his presidential campaign made him a viable top-tier contender on financial par with then-rival Hillary Rodham Clinton. Smoot is now the chief of staff for U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

I’ve read the WaPo profile, looked at their website, watched the two videos below, and I still don’t quite get it. They’re claiming, essentially, to be nonpartisan and less interested in pushing particular policies than in “dialogue” and “cooperation” for their own sake. Which, given the realities in the Senate, is a very thinly veiled way of calling for fewer filibusters and more Democratic — sorry, I mean bipartisan — legislation. Here’s their statement of principles, for what it’s worth; assuming they stick around, it’ll be fun to watch how this changes once the GOP has a majority in both chambers again.
We want the political process broken down into three steps:
1) open and respectful dialogue
2) thoughtful and informed deliberation
3) competent and decisive execution. The process is so broken, we can’t get past step 1 right now.

A majority of Americans think the federal government poses a threat to rights of Americans, according to a new national poll.

The University of Tennessee’s newly announced policy banning all gun ownership by student-athletes is an extreme overreaction to the criminal acts of a few.
UT’s athletic director, Mike Hamilton, said that under the new policy, the university will automatically dismiss any student-athlete found in possession of a gun — even those with permits and even those living off-campus. This over-reaching policy prevents law-abiding UT student-athletes from hunting and engaging in recreational and competitive shooting. More importantly, it also prohibits them from owning a firearm for self-defense, a right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

A Republican member of Congress has released a new video showing him talking about the status of abortion in the United States. Rep. Trent Franks, an Arizona republican, is generating controversy by saying that abortion has been more devastating for the black community than slavery. Franks, who has sponsored legislation responding to the high rate of abortions in the African-American community, released his comments to liberal blogger Mike Stark.
“In this country, we had slavery for God knows how long,” Frank says. Nowadays, he says Americans look back and ask about society for allowing it: “What was the matter with them? You know, I can’t believe, you know, four million slaves. It is a crushing mark on America’s soul.”
“And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted,” Franks continues.

Fannie Mae needs another $15 billion in federal assistance, bringing its total to more than $75 billion. And worse, the mortgage finance company warned its losses will continue this year. The rescue of Fannie Mae and sister company Freddie Mac is turning out to be one of the most expensive aftereffects of the financial meltdown. The new request means the total bill for the duo will top $126 billion.
And the pain isn’t over. Fannie warned Friday that it will need even more money from the Treasury, as unemployment remains high and millions of Americans lose their homes through foreclosure.

David Axelrod on CNN Campbell Brown, even Campbell is warning him of the gravity of reconciliation.
4th video in one day on the Democrats plans for reconciliation, Harry Reid, Ben Cardin, Barack Obama and now David Axelrod…
Brown: “Doesn’t he [Lamar] have a point? If the President is prepared to ram it though with just Democratic votes, a simple majority, does that not undermine his claim to be seeking a solution that both parties really truly can support?”
