The Photo That Unleashed Jeffrey Goldberg’s Bizarre, Unhinged Partisanship

2011 May 10

I admit it.  I like Jeffrey Goldberg.

He is funny and smart. To take just one small example, without his clever exegesis of The Sopranos, I would have gotten lost in the plot, and his insights unveiled for me nuances and allusions that made me the hit of dinner parties.

Most important of all, Goldberg, though a leftist, is a strong advocate for Israel.  His is not my version of a secure Israel, but his voice is needed on the Left in the dangerous world of Israel-hatred.

However, sometimes our Jeffrey is a little weird.  Just this week, he has become a spokesman for the flaming Israel-basher Tony Kushner, who, to the credit of the City University of New York, was denied an honorary degree. And then there was his Talmudic sermon after the death of bin Laden on not rejoicing at the death of a killer.  It’s not the Jewish way, you see. (Ezekiel 18:23 et al.)

MJ Rosenberg Spits on Elizabeth Taylor’s Grave

2011 March 30

So predictable is MJ Rosenberg, the big-mouthed Jewish anti-Zionist, that one avoids his rants like the plague.

Rosenberg, who blogs at TPM Café and the Huffington Post, is a Foreign Policy Fellow at George Soros’s Media Matters Action Network. A former aide to Democrats and one-time AIPAC bigwig, somewhere along the path he took a sharp left turn and toppled into the noxious miasma of anti-Zionism.

The heroes of this blowhard include Judge Goldstone, Helen Thomas (“I love Helen Thomas”), Walt and Mearsheimer (“Happy Anniversary, Professors Walt and Mearsheimer!”), and all the victimized Palestinian “children”; his capacious hate list includes his former associates at AIPAC, Binyamin Netanyahu, the “settlements,” Commentary Magazine, the “Jewish Lobby,” and all “neo-cons.”

UNRWA Suggests Teaching Palestinians the Holocaust… and the Palestinian Schoolteachers Threaten Rebellion

2011 March 24

Here is news: The Palestinians are angry. Apparently, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has suggested that the Holocaust be taught to Palestinian children.

To many, the real news here would be that UNRWA, the wholly owned subsidiary of the Palestinian cause, would even suggest such a thing. And yet, to the Palestinians, the very idea is infuriating. Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) alerts us to this screed from the official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida:

…everyone knows that the story of the Jewish Holocaust is a story about which there is great controversy, and in the heart of Europe—even in the heart of the Jewish communities themselves—there are people who do not accept the Israeli narrative concerning the Holocaust. Why should UNRWA push itself into a subject that for more than 60 years has aroused a great amount of controversy and fabrication…?

And PMW calls further attention to an interview with Al-Quds in which Nabila Al-Salah, a member of a committee for affirming the “right of return,” says that “study of the Holocaust in UNRWA schools is disgraceful, and opposed to UNRWA’s educational goals. She noted that study of the Holocaust serves the Zionist narrative at the expense of the refugee issue and the issue of the Palestinian people.”

None of this is new for the Palestinian Authority, and particularly for Mahmoud Abbas, leader of the PA. In a 2006 article entitled “’Acceptable’ Holocaust Denial, David Bedein quotes from Abbas’s doctoral thesis, written in 1982 in Moscow, at the Institute for Oriental Studies:

World War Two caused the death of 40 million people from different parts of the world. Ten million Germans, 20 million Soviets, and more….Rumors at the end of the war said that 6 million of the world’s Jews were among the victims in the war of extermination that was waged against the Jewish people and later on against other peoples. The fact is that no one can confirm this number or deny it. The number could be 6 million, but it could be much smaller, perhaps even smaller than one million….Many researchers who discussed the number reached the unconventional conclusion that it is no more than several hundred thousand.

In case there was any doubt, Hamas is in full agreement with the Palestinian Authority. According to AP, Hamas Education Minister Mohammed Asqoul has said, “Playing with the education of our children in the Gaza Strip is a red line.”

Again, this is a recurrent theme for Hamas. Take a look at a 2008 video from Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV:

Ironically, all this fuss about a red line may be for naught. Far truer to its raison d’etre, UNRWA is rethinking its fanciful and radical proposal. According to the Associated Press, “it [UNRWA] could face another obstacle: its own schoolteachers. In about a dozen interviews, they said they did not want to teach the materials and warned of rebellion. ‘The agency will open the gates of hell with this step’ said one schoolteacher, Sami.”

Now we’re getting closer to reality. As far back as 2009, UNRWA reassuringly slammed the door on the “gates of hell.” As PMW reports, “Commissioner-General Karen Abu Zayd strongly denied rumors that UNRWA will be teaching the subject of the Holocaust as part of its curriculum.”

So what do the Palestinians routinely teach their kids? In short, the culture of death. In books, cartoons, and TV, the standard leitmotifs are the glorification of suicide terror, the exaltation of violence against Jews, and the promotion of shahada (death for the sake of Allah)—even for little children. Such madness has no age limitations.

Have a look at this one video, courtesy of PMW. (There are many more at their website.) Here indeed is instruction for children that falls well within the dreaded red line.

The Presbyterians and Their Jewish Problem

2010 July 2

The Presbyterian Church is leaking:  Its congregants are trickling away.  About one million members have defected in the last 25 years.

This loss of members may (or may not) be discussed at the 219th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) [PC(USA)]  starting Friday in Minneapolis and running through next week.  It may be tucked in somewhere among such topics as “racial ethnic concerns,” “gender justice,” HIV testing, and such festivities as the “celebration of faith, hope, and love for all persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities ….” But looking at the schedule, we can be assured that one subject will be front and center:

“How do we solve the problem of Israel?”

Ahoy! Hoist the Hijab! This Ain’t No “Love Boat”

2010 June 24

A new flotilla is getting ready to steam into Gaza, and this time, one of them has an all-female crew! The chick-boat, whose cargo will consist principally of loose screws, is called the Mariam.

Gaza has obviously become the hottest cruise destination of the season, and the girls getting it together for the chick-boat are not about to miss out on another big splash on the international social scene. Look at the attention those guys got on last week’s flotilla, the one dispatched by the Insani Yardim Vakli (Turkish for The Insane Garden of my Uncle.) That kind of press and publicity doesn’t just fall into your lap, you have to go where the action is, a happening place—like Gaza.

According to Israel National, the flotilla is set to leave Lebanon, and the organizers, Christian and Muslim, are “tied closely to the Hizbullah terrorist organization, and openly profess their hatred of Israel,” which is a ready-made guarantee of shipboard camaraderie. The report continues:

Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Rabbis Submit to Islamist Pressure

2010 June 21

Among Boston’s Jews, Charles Jacobs is a hero, the very model of the perfect Jewish activist. To others, it seems, he is a pain in the neck.

Jacobs, you see, has stumbled into a nasty public-relations balagan (Israeli slang for “mess”).  He has collided with a wall of Leftist Boston-area rabbis who are  “shocked” and “appalled” at Jacobs.  So whence this uproar?

First, he has called attention to the fact that our governor, Deval Patrick, was caught on video paying an obsequious visit to Boston’s own $16,000,000 McMosque, the largest of its kind on the East coast.  Have a look at the video distributed by Jacobs.

Outnumbered But Not Alone

2010 June 14

I had an unsettling experience recently. I found myself –a Jew—outnumbered by Gentiles at a march and rally for Israel.

This happy event, with balloons and flags and shofars, was sponsored by a local group, Christians and Jews United for Israel. One’s heart was warmed by the ecclesiastical banners, the crosses, the priestly benedictions, and yet, the spirit sagged a bit when it became clear that, of the more than 500 enthusiastic participants, we Jews were clearly outnumbered.

On an occasion like this, with its faint odor of sanctity, I would say—though Jewish folks were cheering and calling out encouragement from balconies and windows—that Jews tend to avoid public prayer like the flu. Jews squirm when the Bible, Old or New, is invoked in the open air.

The point here is that when you say “Christians,” Jews of all stripes tend to dive under the bed the way the old ones did when they heard the Cossacks coming. “They’ll kill us! They’ll convert us! They’ll baptize our children! They’ll use us for the Second Coming!” We all know the drill. Replacement theology. The rapture.
