Leftists play ostrich with facts they don’t like, and American discourse suffers

2011 March 22

Cross-Posted from Bookworm Room.

The other day, Mr. Bookworm asked me to tell him “what the right wing wackos were talking about.”  Among other things, I mentioned that people were interested in the fact that Hillary had recently announced that she would not return as Secretary of State for Obama’s second term, leading to speculation that she was planning a primary challenge. read more…

Gaddafi and the Passover Story

2011 March 3

Gaddafi is not going gently into the good night.  With the bitter end staring him in the face, he’s bombing his own countrymen and threatening to kill them by the thousands and tens of thousands if they don’t leave him his throne.  In his honor, I reprint my Passover post from last year, one I wrote during the Iranian rebellion, but which seems apposite here:

***

An antisemitic Jew I know, rather than seeing the Passover ceremony as the celebration of freedom (the world’s first and for a long time only successful slave revolt), and of justice and morality (the Ten Commandments), derides the whole ceremony as the unconscionable and immoral celebration of the genocide of the Egyptian people.  What troubles him so much is the fact that, after each plague, when Pharaoh seems about to soften and let the Jews go, God hardens Pharaoh’s heart, leading to the necessity of yet another plague, culminating in the death of the first born. read more…

Why It’s Dumb to Think Obama’s Childhood in Indonesia Has Anything to Do with the Crisis in Egypt

2011 February 8

When I was six years old, within a few short months, I went from having perfect vision to being extremely nearsighted.  I was discussing that fact with a friend today, and noted that I have no memory of ever having seen well without help from glasses or contacts. read more…

There’s Something Deeply Wrong with the Birth Certificate Narrative

2011 January 24

Cross-posted from Bookworm Room

Something doesn’t add up here:

Back in June 2008, the Obama campaign released a digitally scanned short form of his Hawaii birth certificate.  When people questioned the scanning, a few carefully chosen media types were invited to attest to the underlying long-form document’s authenticity, including FactCheck.org:

FactCheck.org staffers have now seen, touched, examined and photographed the original birth certificate. We conclude that it meets all of the requirements from the State Department for proving U.S. citizenship. Claims that the document lacks a raised seal or a signature are false. We have posted high-resolution photographs of the document as “supporting documents” to this article. Our conclusion: Obama was born in the U.S.A. just as he has always said.

FactCheck included pictures of a real document purporting to be a genuine long-form Hawaiian “Barack Hussein Obama” birth certificate. read more…

Reading the Constitution in Congress: So Sensible Even a Teenager Gets It

2011 January 6

Cross-Posted from Bookworm Room

My daughter’s 8th grade history class is studying the Constitution.  With the Republican House’s plan to inaugurate its majority by reading the Constitution aloud, I had a little talk with her about the Constitution.

Me:  Can you tell me what the Constitution is?

Daughter:  It’s a document that tells the government what to do. read more…

Israel, American Jews, American Christians and a whole bunch of other stuff too

2010 December 6

I struggled for a few minutes to find a clever title for this post that would convey the volume of information I’m about to download from my brain, but realized I couldn’t.  A laundry list description will just have to do.

You see, last night, I had the pleasure of attending a Hanukkah party that the NorCal chapter of the Republican Jewish Coalition hosted.  What wasn’t surprising was that conservative Jews attended the party.  What was surprising was that they came from all over the Bay Area. Apparently the opportunity to get together with fellow conservative Jews is a beguiling one, even if one has to travel a hundred miles or so to do it. read more…

The Left: Intentionally Misunderstanding a Straightforward Statement About Muslims

2010 November 12

Cross-posted from Bookworm Room

There is a new website out there called Pictures of Muslims Wearing Things. It shows pictures of Muslims in clothes other than those associated with Sharia law. The person who started the website did so for a very specific reason:

Former NPR analyst Juan Williams, among other ignorant people, has an irrational fear of Muslims, and thinks you can identify them based on what they look like. Here I will post pictures of Muslims wearing all sorts of things in an attempt to refute that there is such a thing as “Muslim garb” or a Muslim look.

In other words, the site’s whole point is to prove that not all Muslims wear Muslim garb. Well, duh. Williams’ point wasn’t that he’s afraid of Muslims generally. It was that, when he sees people in traditional Muslim garb, he has a frisson of fear, because people who embrace traditional Muslim garb also seem attached to certain traditional Muslim ideas, such as violent jihad against anyone perceived as an enemy of Islam. read more…

A Crack in the Armor? Another Conversation with a Leftist Friend

I was talking with my lib friend yesterday (the same one who said Tuesday’s vote would inaugurate fascism in America), when he opined that Boehner had said something incredibly stupid.

“What?” I asked. read more…

Socialist Governments Just LOVE to Control Food

2010 November 2

As Jonah Goldberg pointed out in Liberal Fascism, socialists, as part of their ongoing effort to perfect mankind, are obsessed with food intake.  The Nazis were especially focused on purifying the Aryan body. read more…
