Conservatives: Time for mass exodus!

Here in the totally Democrat-run state of Illinois, a 66% income tax just hit our paychecks last week. As you can imagine, anyone with any sense has spent the last week discussing to which state we should flee. My friends and I have been fantasizing about a conservative commune where everyone showers, no one would starve (because we hunt) and there is no wife-swapping. It’s a fun exercise to think about. Several of us believe a solution to our partisan problems (before it descends into civil war) might just be to part ways with the American Left and set up traditional American government in the already conservative states. The first goal should be beefing up these already rational and taxpayer-friendly states with more like-minded citizens. Too many of us are separated and living in enemy territory, forced into an ideological closet from which we dare not exit for fear of public humiliation and shunning.

Living in a solid blue state, it is nearly impossible not to have been accosted at a cocktail party while trying to enjoy some shrimp by a (literally) foaming at the mouth leftist who accidentally found out you voted for Bush. And God forbid it should be discovered you once worked for Rush Limbaugh (like me). In that scenario, not one person would come to your defense if your accuser threw you through a plate glass window. I’m not a bumper sticker person (too hard to scrape off) but I’ve known a few brave souls who’ve had their cars scratched for advertising their conservative beliefs. There must be better places to live. I’ve come to the conclusion that now might be the time to start looking.  The following are the best and worst places in the country for conservatives, taking a number of factors into consideration from taxes to dating opportunities, political affiliation, weather, housing prices and more.

And we’re starting with…

As someone who grew up in the inner city of Chicago, lived 15 years in the Virginia suburbs while working in Washington, DC, and now transplanted to Oklahoma, I am delighted that you rated Oklahoma in the top 5. As you mentioned in your article, the people are friendly, the weather is beautiful, and the cost of housing is incredible. We were astounded by what our money could buy after living on the East Coast. Oklahoma City and Tulsa have lots to offer and if you miss a big, big city, Dallas is only a 2-1/2 hour drive. I was hesitant to move here and reluctantly agreed thinking it would be a short stay. It's been 15 years now and I still love it!

Just a clarification on two items in the AK section.
1- The PFD checks were not $3,000 last year. I think in 2009 they were huge + a one time energy rebate (a Sarah deal).
2- To me the wording seems to imply that ACES is the reason we receive a yearly payment which would be incorrect. ACES directly benefits the State Treasury, not individual citizens. We have received the PFD for decades due to other legislation.

Oh, and Alaska DOES rock as a place to live. Which I can say easily now that Winter is over!

Give Peggy dumb dumb a map of the US and point to where Arizona is located and then show her where Mexico is.

You’d think that after being shot twice, I’d never want to see a gun ever again. Quite the contrary, I’d like to have 20 and carry at least 3 to ensure it doesn’t happen again, or at least get a few shots off in my defense. I get totally alarmed when someone near me is packin’ heat, all the more reason to have 2 on my hip, you know, just in case.

You forgot North Dakota check it out.

OK – regarding Washington State: despite my screen name, this is where I currently live and work. You are correct on one topic: the Northwestern part of the place is full of emotion driven left wing whack jobs of all ilk, especially Seattle.

However, let me offer some clarity on other characteristics of the place:
    1. It is a "shall issue" state for concealed weapons permits and has been since at least the 1930s, meaning if you want to carry a concealed pistol and you have no felony convictions or involuntary mental health commitments, you pay a small fee (not sure about the initial fee these days – I've had one for 30 years) and get a card good for, I think, five or six years. The renewal is $35. You are not obliged to demonstrate you know anything about guns, on the theory that you don't need to demonstrate competence to exercise other civil rights, so. . .
    2. It is a "castle doctrine" state, meaning you can shoot to kill anybody who assails you in a place you are legally permitted to be if you reasonably feel your life or limbs, or those of others, are threatened. You have no duty to retreat before defending yourself. You can't be sued for a righteous shooting.
    3. If you kill someone and claim self defense, the prosecutor can try you for murder, but if you're acquitted he has to pay all your legal costs.
    4. You can (and I do) carry your concealed weapon into the State Capitol if you have a license. Courtrooms, prisons, schools are off limits, but just about every place else is OK.
    4. Much of the state, outside of Seattle and suburbs, is pretty conservative.

Idaho and Montana are much better places to live, but the job is in Washington.

these numbers cannot be right. Hello…Chicago is in IL. We have the highest (or darn near close to it) crime rate in America. There is no way NO WAY that IL has lower crime than Nebraska….no way. Don't buy it.

    Hi all,

Several lists to which I belong are posting this story, which incorrectly states that the new Illinois State income tax is raised ***to 66%.*** Actually the new state personal income tax rate is 5%.

Lord knows Ill. is terrible in many ways, most of them traceable to the thugs ruling from within spitting distance of Lake Michigan, but that statement is just plain wrong.

Our state (personal) income tax is raised ****BY**** 66 %. Not the same thing at all!

A quick Yahoo search for "Illinois income tax increase" will turn up many results, but the Christian Science Monitor, for instance, writes:

    http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2011/0112/Illinois-t

"Illinois tax increase: why lawmakers passed 66 percent income-tax hike

"No other state has successfully raised income taxes to balance its 2011 budget. The Illinois tax increase would push the personal income tax rate from 3 percent to 5 percent.

"By Mark Guarino, Staff writer / January 12, 2011 — Chicago

"The Illinois legislature has passed personal income-tax increases of 66 percent and corporate income-tax in creases of 45 percent, designed to address a $15 billion state budget deficit that lawmakers said was leading the state into insolvency.

"By the early hours of Wednesday, Senate and House lawmakers had voted to raise the personal income tax rate from 3 percent to 5 percent and the corporate tax rate from 4.8 percent to 7 percent. Both rates were adjusted to carry through until 2015, when they would drop to 3.25 percent and 5.25 percent, respectively."

I never incorrectly stated what you assert. I said our taxes went up by 66% which they did. It is now 66% higher than it was previous to the tax increase. There is no mistake here.

    • April 26, 2011

      and here's the quote directly.
"we just got a 66% income tax hike that took $100 a month out of my $300 grocery and gas budget."

      That sentence is entirely accurate.

I agree with all of your choices, but have to wonder if the top spot couldn't be a tie between Illinois and California, thus leaving the #2 spot for that leftist hellhole, Massachusetts. I'm north of their border in New Hampshire, and we have to fend off the migrating Massachusetts lefties with a broom to keep them from turning the Granite State into another solid block of blue like the rest of the northeast. They flee Mass because of the taxes, and then try to tax US because they miss the "perks" they left behind.

AZ…that one surprsies me and this is why. I was listening to a man who teaches in AZ and he is a very conservative man. He is trying to keep his tongue silent and to do as little as possible to be noticed. Why? Because he has 2 years left in the school system before retiring and the school does NOT permit conservative views. IN FACT, the students at the high school are so delighted that obama won and when asked why they said "Romney would take away their foodstamps, hates woman and will remove woman rights and doesn't like Mexicans". These are the people in the next 5-10 years that will be controlling AZ. So how a conservative will manage there is something I can't see happening easily. When we deciede the best places I think that the schools and what is being taught or what doctrine is being promoted is a neccesity because those students are our future. Presently, in the public schools a communist doctrine is benig pushed, taught and deemed great. These students have very little education and are coming out very arrogant and seem to think they are fit to be gods because they love communisim.

I feel sorry for so many conservatives who live in places like Illinois, California, New York, and the small but messed up state of Maryland. I just looked up our political demographics, and discovered that there is more red in our state than I thought, but somehow (Montgomery Co., DC and Baltimore) our conservative votes are overpowered by the blue faction. Oklahoma sounds wonderful. My husband and I, who both grew up in MD, wonder why we get funny looks from people we pass and greet. One of my students said hello to everyone he passed when we were on a field trip to DC, but the only ones who were kind enough to smile and wave were the homeless people. We are looking at moving to Texas, but waiting for one of our boys to graduate from school (non-public).

Ah, do my eyes deceive me? There is really another Marylander who leans conservative? Be still my beating heart!! It just keeps getting worse here in Maryland. Every five or six cars don bumper stickers stating their love for obama and obamacare. I don't dare slap a libertarian OR conservative statement on my car…..I love my car too much and don't want it scratched or worse. We have seen two..yes, two cars with Romney stickers. And we followed a car into the Wholefoods and actually waited for them to get out so we could shake their hands. Their bumper sticker said…..'We don't listen to the liberal media' and 'NAVY'. My son was in private school where liberalism thrives..and thrives hard! We love our home and our neighborhood but have been researching other states for a possible move. I have never seen such a huge racial divide as I have seen over the past four years. It is perhaps the saddest thing of all resulting directly from liberals. The hate against white people is palpable. I can only conclude that white liberals hate themselves and wish for their own demise….taking the rest of us down with them. And the poor black and white people are having the wool pulled over their eyes because liberals want to spoon feed them and keep them right where they are….without challenge, without dreams, without responsibility, without hope.

So how come Nevada wasn't mentioned? It is a lot like Arizona. It does tend to be conservative – I mean not counting Las Vegas but my parents live in Summerlin – near Vegas and they say it is conservative.

Well, I’ve considered moving to Nebraska, Alaska, or Texas numerous times. I’m a conservative from North Carolina, and this state is becoming more and more leftist from all the cities. I feel like the rural appalachian old-timers like me and my family are losing all our power in politics.

If you wish to amplify your presence, better reach out
to market outside your primary demographics. But blocking access
to a particular website cannot stop tech-savvy Internet users
employing virtual private networks or other technologies to access unbanned
IP addresses outside the country in order to access banned sites.
Which means, everything you’ve worked for has disappeared.
