Judging Islamic Regimes By Their Behavior

Hamas men engaging in "behavior."

The latest fantasy dreamed up by Team Obama about the Middle East is the most dangerous and ridiculous one yet. Completely ignoring history and reality, the administration has decided that “we shouldn’t be afraid of Islam in the politics of [Middle Eastern] countries,” as a senior administration official told the Washington Post late last week. Islamic political parties and governments will be judged based on their “behavior,” not “their relationship with Islam,” the official added. In other words, the administration plans to stand by and watch as anti-American Islamic fundamentalists win elections, join governments and seize power around the Middle East.

Here’s one example of Islamist “behavior” in Gaza:

Rival Palestinian forces clashed in Gaza on Sunday, killing two militants by throwing them out of high-rise buildings.

Hamas militants kidnapped an officer in a Fatah-linked security force, took him to the roof of a 15-story apartment building and threw him off. Mohammed Sweirki, 25, from the Presidential Guard of President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah, was killed in the plunge.

Or this:

The IDF has learned that Hamas elements in Judea and Samaria are stepping up attempts to carry out a kidnapping “in order to assist the general Palestinian struggle.” They are being encouraged by Hamas’s headquarters in Damascus.

Military experts estimate that the abduction planned for Judea and Samaria will not be modeled on the Gilad Shalit abduction in 2006, in that the terrorists will not seek to hold a live hostage. Instead, they would rather abduct their victim, kill him, and then negotiate for his return, while creating uncertainty regarding the hostage’s condition.

There’s this “behavior” from the Taliban:

The attackers used water pistols to spray acid on girls walking to school in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, blinding at least two of them, U.S. military officials said at the time.

And on and on.

Apparently the administration doesn’t realize that most Islamic fundamentalist movements around the Middle East have been totally hostile to American interests, have killed U.S. soldiers and sponsored a tremendous amount of terrorism. This is their default “behavior.”

The Taliban, of course, sheltered al-Qaeda and is now murdering American troops in Afghanistan. Various Iraqi Islamic fundamentalist movements formed the core of the insurgency there that killed so many of our soldiers and innocent Iraqis, while Hezbollah murdered 241 of our troops in Lebanon in 1983. Hamas has significantly undermined the security of our close ally Israel by launching countless terrorist attacks and missiles against it, and the many horrendous acts of al-Qaeda are familiar to most Americans. Even the fundamentalist Saudi government has provided aid to al-Qaeda, and Saudi Arabia’s anti-Western ideology also likely helped inspire the 15 9/11 hijackers who came from that country.

In addition, many Islamic fundamentalist movements — including Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iraqi insurgency movements — are closely allied with and have received funding from our arch-enemy, Iran. The Taliban and al-Qaeda have also received aid from Iran, according to multiple reports. Common sense and history strongly suggest that any other Islamic fundamentalists movements which gain power are very likely to become quite friendly with the Islamic Republic. Given Iran’s frequent characterization of the U.S. as the “Great Satan,” its support of groups that kill many of our troops, and its ambition to take over the entire Middle East, it probably would not be in America’s interest for Iran-friendly groups to obtain more power in the Middle East.

If the administration had even a rudimentary understanding of the Middle East and our interests there, it would comprehend that we must do everything possible to prevent Islamic fundamentalists from gaining power in the region.
