I doubt very seriously that this is some kind of ‘grass-roots’ popular uprising by people that are disenchanted with the government, fed up with poverty or a lack of jobs. While they may be some of the people protesting, I would see this as being orchestrated by people seeking to capitalize on what happened in Tunisia. – Eddie Pate, director of the David and Faith Kim School of Global Missions at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary.
Pate also told Baptist Press that people should pay attention to clear connections that protest surges has with Islamism.
I think the fact that the situation worsened after Friday prayers is an indication that Muslim leaders are at best not discouraging the protests. We have to remember that the Muslim Brotherhood started in Egypt. They are likely to demand a more influential role in the next government should the current government be forced to step down. - Pate
Israel has made it clear they fear the outcome of a new government but our government is promoting it with reckless abandon. No one claims that President Mubarak is an ideal leader, but he has effectively supported Israel and squelched the Muslim Brotherhood. That is all changing this past week. One Egyptian missionary (who will go nameless for safety reasons) explained:
The kind of change to be brought about by popular uprising is quite unclear. It could bring an even more authoritarian type of government. Right now in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood is far more present and out in public making demands than they would have been if the secular government kept them under control. So the likelihood of the country becoming more Islamic is probably greater than it becoming more secular.
When you see our media and politicians promoting these young protesters you should consider one more thing. Egypt has long been a moderate presence in the Middle East. But what has the youth in the streets been geared toward in recent years? Is it secular freedom or Islamic dominance?
After the Coptic church bombing on January 1st, a Coptic newspaper editor was quoted as saying something that should give us all pause about these young protesters we see on the news.
The infiltration of political Islam into our education, our schools, into the hearts and minds of school teachers and into our school books and is extremely dangerous because it produces innocent children who are infected by the version of Islam that does not accept the other and preaches non-acceptance of Christians. – Youssef Sidhom
It’s time to stop supporting those who just may give Radical Islamists control of Egypt and then make the U.S., Israel, and Christians their enemy.
