Editor’s Note: Keith Olbermann’s last episode of Countdown was broadcast on Friday. David Forsmark — NRB’s resident Olbermann critic — will have some remarks shortly. This list post was originally published on January 5 here.

Sherlock Holmes once referred, to Watson’s bewilderment, to the “curious incident of the dog in the night time.”  Watson replied that the dog did nothing in the night time.  Which, of course, was the “curious incident.”

This year, after barking– and biting– a lot in 2008 and 2009, Keith Olberman was most conspicuous when he was absent.  In at least two out of his three biggest moments, he had his biggest impact when he didn’t show up.

Yes, Keith still ranted, raved and said things like the Tea Party are a bunch of racist creeps who want to go back to Jim Crow and end democracy, named Bristol Palin (Bristol Palin!) the Worst Person in the World, and yelled that the opposition to “moderate” Barack Obama had to be racist.

And yes, this was the year that Jon Stewart slapped Keith down for his demented screed against Scott Brown on the eve—and after—of the Massachusetts Special Senate Election.

But the Scott Brown election not only showed the Obama wave had crested; that moment also was the beginning of the end of Keith Olbermann’s relevance on cable TV.

So here are 10 of Keith’s biggest meltdowns this year.  But you may notice that compared to previous years, your blood pressure might not rise all that much.  Why?  It’s just getting old—and the ineffectiveness of the MSNBC propaganda effort was just illustrated in November.
