Some may think this new app will perhaps sound like the perfect gift for that “socially conscious” teenager, sibling, co-worker or friend, but one would be advised to do a little homework regarding the Sea Shepard Society and Mr. Watson before transferring some of one’s filthy capitalist lucre to those who support his ideology and conduct.
The Sea Shepard Conservation Society is a radical environmental group started in 1977 by Greenpeace co-founder Paul Watson, an example of just the danger ideological fanaticism of the “green” variety poses to civil society and why the cultural Left has been so attracted to environmentalism from its inception. In any sane age, Watson would be relegated to the dark, shadowy recesses of human and political social pathology with others of a similar hue such as the members of the Weather Underground or the Aryan Nations. Not so with Mr. Watson, however, who, like so many other leftists has been able to trade what he lacks in character for the kind of trendy, policically correct public morality that covers a multitude of sins.
Watson has been featured on Animal Planet’s Whale Wars since 2007, a show which follows his exploits and gives him a major public platform for his beliefs. Yes, a real terrorist who rams and sinks fishing boats and whaling ships engaging in legal, lawful activity, endangers innocent human lives, destroys countless millions in private property, and brandishes (and fires) automatic weapons, is grist for a long running promotional series on a major cable network.
Following a long tradition within the Left, the cause is its own justification. Morality, the rule of law, and respect for the rights of others are little more than annoying philosophical and moral gnats that must be swatted away in the heat of hubris. Watson’s statement that “Earthworms are more important than people“, echoing a number of similar statements over the years by other leaders of the environmental movement, is indicative of the high fever environmentalism can create in its partisans as much as of long established tendencies within the Left itself.
Strange bedfellows, capitalism and eco-terrorism — but for many on the Left, only in theory.
