Social conservatism is withering now because we have allowed our ideals which appeal to everyone to be eclipsed by one or two divisive issues. I suspect that we can find more support for pro-life positions if people were to see that we affirm and celebrate all life, and I frankly think gays will accept civil unions if they see that those of us who support traditional marriage are seeking to preserve, from the government, what is considered by many a sacrament. But we will never achieve anything if the official stance of social conservatism is to disengage from the culture at large and only to emerge when we want to make a stink about who will be at CPAC or claim that America will crumble if gays serve openly in the military.
What I, and most Americans I suspect, would like to preserve is the spiritual, philosophical and moral heritage of Western civilization. We all want to master nature, experience the divine, and live in a moral and just society that respects individual freedom but brooks no trespass on the safety and rights of others. Like our forefathers from time immemorial we want to proudly carry the light of the West into the darkest corners of the Earth and spread the ideals of Liberty, Justice and Honor to all the peoples of the world. Search your hearts: are we doing that now? No, we have failed, we have betrayed our ancestors and allowed over 5,000 years of history to be overturned. We are not conserving anything, we are simply spinning our intellectual wheels while adding our voices to the cacophony of the Internet echo chamber.
In so doing, we are harming America as much as the Left.
