I hate Kevin Smith. His slovenly appearance and (somewhat baffling) modicum of success have made him dearly beloved by that most misbegotten of cultural mutants: the loser hipster nerd.

Unless you’ve never seen a film made before the year you were born, it’s obvious his movies are crap. Clerks? Why would anyone spend ninety minutes with two stoned, incompetent name-taggers, when perfectly good copies of The Fountainhead are available on DVD?

And I, too, once had an idea for a “controversial” movie “satire” about stoopid ol’ “organized religion” that was a lot like Dogma; alas, I couldn’t get funding for it because I was only 14.

I forget what his other movies are right now, but I don’t like them either.

Now Kevin Smith has a new movie debuting at Sundance early next year. It’s his first horror movie, and it’s about vicious religious extremists running amok in America.

Amazingly, the religious extremists AREN’T Muslims.

You know how these days, Hollywood counterintuitively puts 90% of the movie in the trailer, so if, like me, you’ve haven’t been impressed by any Hollywood film since around 1986,  you conveniently don’t have to go see it?

Well, Kevin Smith has one-upped that bizarre marketing ploy. With his new movie, you don’t even have to see the trailer to know everything about it (although you can watch that undistinguished production below, if you wish).

You just have to hear the movie’s title:

Red State.

So now you’re thinking:

“Hey, Kathy! I’ll be that’s about a bunch of heavily accented hillbillies (played by unaccented Northerners) who go around killing non-hicks in horrible ways, probably in and around a rusty, dust covered old gas station/motel/farm without a working telephone. But I don’t know why I’m guessing that, because nobody has EVER made a movie like that 10,000 Maniacs The Sadist Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Hills Have Eyes Deliverance House of 1000 Corpses before!!”

Here’s Kevin Smith talking about Red State:

The movie’s called ‘Red State’ and it’s very much about that subject matter, that point of view and that position taken to the absolute extreme. It’s certainly not [Fred] Phelps himself but it’s very much inspired by a Phelps figure. And to me, too, the notion of using a Phelps-like character as a villain, as horrifying and scary as that guy can be, there’s even something more insidious than him that lurks out there in as much as a public or a government that allows it and that’s the other thing that I’m trying to examine in a big, big way.

Yes, let’s “examine” Fred “God Hates Fags” Phelps, the boogyman progressives love to scare themselves with, the way children do.
