4. The Obamas: “You Sacrifice While We Go On Vacation.”
There’s been much talk from the Left about our need to “sacrifice” in order to endure these difficult economic times, but none so much as from the First Couple themselves. This concept has been a theme throughout the Obama presidency, as we’ve been told we must sacrifice to make the economy work.
The president has repeatedly stressed the need for us to tighten our belts. He has informed us, “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times …”
Obama’s “mandate for shared sacrifice” has supposedly guided economic policy and presumably influenced decisions involving all areas of government. I know plenty of people who have sacrificed, government suggestion or not, because of the economy. There’s quite a bit of belt-tightening going on out there, pretty much out of necessity. But not from the Obama family.
This year alone, the Obamas have traveled on several opulent vacations, at a time when many Americans have forgone taking expensive trips. Most famously, they went to Martha’s Vineyard this summer and Hawaii this Christmas. Both vacations created travel controversies, when the Obamas’ dog traveled to New England on its own jet, and when Barack and Michelle traveled separately to Hawaii, adding $63,000 to the cost of the trip.
Those are just the tip of the iceberg. The First Lady went on a high-end, expensive trip to Spain in the late summer, creating a stir. Even though many estimates of the cost were blown out of proportion, the First Family took what was nonetheless a pricey trip to India in November. And, in the aftermath of the Gulf oil spill, the Obama family took a characteristically tone-deaf trip to Panama City, far from the most dangerous oil threats, to declare that “the Gulf is open.” All of this is to say nothing of the glitzy parties and countless golf games.
The hypocrisy is glaring and plays into the perception of the “Do As I Say, Not as I Do” problems that many liberals have.
It’s an understatement to call this behavior ironic after the repeated calls for Americans to “sacrifice” and the very real sacrifice that so many here are forced to make.
