You won't be seeing this ad on Seattle buses anytime soon. You won't be seeing anti-Israel ads either.

On Tuesday we announced a new campaign from the Freedom Center: countering a disgusting lie against Israel that was being perpetuated by an obscure leftist group.

An announcement today from Seattle’s King County bus service:

“Metro sells advertising to raise revenues to provide transit service. Metro’s existing policy restricts advertising that can be reasonably foreseen to result in harm to, disruption of, or interference with the transportation system. Given the dramatic escalation of debate in the past few days over these proposed ads, and the submission of inflammatory response ads, there is now an unacceptable risk of harm to or disruption of service to our customers should these ads run.”

Metro won’t be running the anti-Israel ad or the counter ads it received.

This is a clear victory for those who support free societies.

It’s also a case study in how to fight the Left. If the movement to delegitimize Israel is going to submit a bus ad, then the movement to support the existence of the freest society in the Middle East is going to submit two. We need to engage and counter the Left on their activist level, using the same hardball tactics they’ve used against free societies for far too long. And when we do that we will win because our message is based on truth instead of fantasies and lies. This is a clear cut case of conservatives understanding and implementing the principles of political war — and then seeing how effective they are.

This victory happened because of the thousands of people out there at the grassroots level who made sure others were aware of what was happening and who had the courage to contact King County transit to complain. Without your support and the noise you brought to this fight then those bus ads would have run.

The fight that we’re engaged in has been going on for centuries and will only get worse before it gets better. It’s easy to get discouraged and to throw one’s hands up in the air. But today you’ve seen concrete evidence that your phone calls, emails, and blog posts can have tangible effects. The Left can be out-thought and out-fought. And it will be — but only if you have the courage and resolve to join us.

While we’re pleased with the result of the campaign, this is a bittersweet victory. King County’s excuse for why they’re not going to run either ad is a troubling, dangerous precedent. Why is it the anti-Israel ads only became so objectionable as to be censored once three pro-freedom groups stepped in to counter them? Is it because King County feared that our ads would provoke violence and vandalism from Seattle’s more radical elements? Whereas they knew that the smaller, more marginalized, more civil Jewish and conservative constituency would just sit back and take the anti-Israel propaganda without responding through criminal acts?

We see just how easily those who threaten violence can provoke officials to censor views which offend them. Our free society won’t be free for long if we’re unable to make sure we have officials who can stand up to thug intimidation.

But we can’t get that when our officials are allied with those who would intimidate us. Note King County Executive Dow Constantine’s words in the statement above:

Given the dramatic escalation of debate in the past few days over these proposed ads, and the submission of inflammatory response ads, there is now an unacceptable risk of harm to or disruption of service to our customers should these ads run.”

[emphasis mine] Why is it that only the response ads were inflammatory? Why the need to editorialize on his opinion of the response ads?

This Freudian slip reveals what we all knew along: Constantine is a Democrat endorsed by a bevy of leftist groups, unions, and publications and he most likely agrees with the sentiments of the jihadist Left. He would have happily allowed the anti-Israel ads if it weren’t for the activism against them.
