Michelle Obama speaking at a "Feed America" event and wearing $500 sneakers and a pair of ill-fitting pants that should be donated to a thrift store.

When I heard that Michelle Obama bought a “thrift store dress” I thought, great! She’s finally getting the message. She’s showing a little restraint and some compassion for the mood of the country. And then I saw the price tag. $2,500? That’s not a thrift store dress. That’s “vintage.” I wish the media would stop treating us like morons. Have you ever been to a thrift store that carried $2,500 items? Our Lady of the Perpetual Scowl might benefit from shopping at a Salvation Army considering the types of get-ups she currently wears. Contrary to popular media opinion, Michelle’s fashion is a scream (literally.) Nothing fits properly, squeezing and pulling and pushing her in all the wrong places and her idea of spicing up any outfit is to add an enormous leather and metal studded belt wide enough to retread your tires.

I don’t begrudge people who can afford it to have nice things. I love rich people. I hope to be one some day. But the president and his family are more than just random rich people. They are a symbol of a nation. They are supposed to lead.

Barack Obama has said we need to sacrifice, to do with less and tighten our belts. Well, sir, mine doesn’t get any tighter, but when do you start tightening yours? Ten vacations in less than two years, star-studded Wednesday night cocktail parties with $100 a plate dinners, trips to India to celebrate the festival of lights with 3000 of your closest friends, $3,500 a night hotel rooms, $500 sneakers worn at a homeless shelter, and now a $2,500 “thrift” dress. It’s gauche.

Remember how tasteless we thought it was when the Clintons took the silverware and blankets with them off Airforce One? I never thought I would be able to say this, but the Obamas beat the Clintons in acute ignorance of proper behavior by a mile.

This president and his wife don’t even pretend to “feel our pain.” They just don’t care.
