David, your points about the New Left and the nature of the leftist project in general are revelatory and have been part of my own move away from a left/chomskyite sympathy. However there have been some real problems with American foreign policy praxis, which raise disturbing questions. I have a lefty Christian theologian friend, William Cavanaugh by name, who wrote a book on torture; in his book he documents that the Pentagon's School of the Americas included training in torture techniques. So if there have been in fact something like American imperial institutions, including torture training institutions, perhaps there is something to the impression of an imperial behemoth behind the ideology of Liberty Bearer. And of course one might mention the leftist critique of the global economic system— the IMF/Washington Consensus/World bank system that is, which maintained or maintains a system of effective debt slavery and privilege (at least, that's what the Left says.) The system, under this vision, is a rotten fraud. I can't accept this without qualifications, but I'm putting this out here in hopes of stirring some discussion, thanks again—
