9.  I Got it Honest—Aaron Tippin

Aaron Tippin attracted attention for consciously patriotic tunes like “Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagles Fly,” post-9/11; and has become Mr. Tea Party for singing “You’ve Got to Stand for Something (Or You’ll Fall for Anything)” at Palin rallies while hinting that the media should “Kiss This,” and singing “Drill Here, Drill Now.

But I still like his first big hit, “I Got it Honest,” a more personal ode to American values and hard work, in the tradition of Charlie Daniels “Long Haired Country Boy.”

If I didn’t earn it, then buddy I don’t want it

That way I can always say, I got it honest

Too many workin’ man anthems focus on injustice or griping about how they are geting screwed by the man.  This guy doesn’t seem “to have his share of the promise,’ but he’s “damn proud of what [he has] accomplished.”  American independence at its best.
