Lieberman told YouTube officials it was a “good first step toward scrubbing mainstream Internet sites of terrorist propaganda.  But it shouldn’t take a letter from Congress — or in the worst possible case, a successful terrorist attack — for YouTube to do the right thing.”

There are many potential problems with YouTube’s approach.  Who gets to determine what defines “promoting terrorism”?  Some on the Left might think a Tea Party rally might promote terror for example.  Also, most true terrorist videos will be in Arabic.  How many Arabic speakers are going to be looking to flag terrorism videos?  And will that number be high enough to even get YouTube’s attention?

Also, why can’t YouTube police this better themselves?  The site will not even release how many people they have on staff reviewing their videos.  However, they have told the government that they don’t have enough people to police everything, writing to one congressman that it is “simply not possible” for them to catch all the dangerous videos.  That’s a little hard for me to believe considering if I post a video with a song on it, within a day or so my video has been tagged for using copyrighted materials.  Why does YouTube know when a video of my 4-year-old daughter in the snow has a Perry Como song on it, but they can’t catch terrorist videos promoting Jihad?  To be honest, it just doesn’t sound like they’re really trying.

I am a big fan of YouTube.  I use it all the time.  And I have no desire to see the government swoop in and try to take control of the site.  But officials at YouTube need to get serious about policing themselves.  They should do it not only to protect their site’s autonomy, but to help protect Americans from terror.
