The fake George Soros-funded media watchdog, Media Matters for America, is using Glenn Beck as a fundraising tool. In an email to supporters Media Matters CEO David Brock calls Beck’s relentless criticism of the far-left money laundering outfit known as the Tides Foundation “violent rhetoric and fear-mongering.” Of course when you’re confessed liar David Brock, everything you disagree with is “hate speech.”

Fundraising letters from both left and right often use hyperbolic language, but the writer doesn’t usually accuse the cited boogeyman of attempted murder and treason as Brock seems to do.  (The full letter is pasted on the second page of this post.)

“Day after day, Beck irresponsibly describes individuals and organizations as threats to America — painting a target on their back,” writes Brock, who has described himself as a journalistic “hit man.” “We need your help to combat Glenn Beck’s emotionally manipulative and hateful stage act. His aggressive rhetoric has come too close to creating real, serious consequences.”

Beck does indeed identify what he considers to be dangerous and wrongheaded groups, just as liberal commentators do. That’s America. If you don’t like it, change the channel.

Because a mentally disturbed man who tuned in to Beck’s program plotted to attack the Tides Foundation in San Francisco, Beck is vicariously liable for the kook’s action, Brock howls:

Enter Byron Williams. After engaging California Highway Patrol officers in a 12-minute shootout in July, Williams revealed he was attempting to “start a revolution by traveling to San Francisco and killing people of importance at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU.” It was of little surprise that he also referred to Glenn Beck as his “schoolteacher”.

Not surprisingly Brock left out a few critical details. As Mark Meed noted, as mass murderers go, Byron Williams was less than impressive. Williams resolved to attack Tides on a Sunday when its offices were closed. He drove erratically and drove at excessive speeds and got himself pulled over by the California Highway Patrol. For no reason in particular Williams got involved in a shootout with the police.

Brock paints Williams as someone who regards Beck as a valued teacher. In an earlier Media Matters post, Williams was quoted saying Beck “blew his mind.” But in fact, Beck has strongly disavowed the use of violence for political ends, and Williams said in an interview he had grown tired of listening to Beck, whom he considered to be a do-nothing. As Meed wrote:

Given the fact that the Examiner interview appears to contradict the man-crush interpretation and in fact shows Williams very much underwhelmed by Beck in particular and impatient with Fox News in general I can’t imagine there would be any context problems with the Media Matters sound bite, can you?

Brock lies. Media Matters lies. That’s what they do.
