In an interview with Concerned Women for America, Peter LaBarbera, president of the group Americans for the Truth about Homosexuality, challenged his critics by asking why so many victims of pedophiles are boys if gays aren’t more given to child molestation than heterosexuals. It would be a provocative question if the premise wasn’t based on a lie aimed at implying that most child molesters target boys. They do not. Studies show that the majority of children who are sexually exploited by adults are female and further, even a casual observer of crime will realize that most “pedophiles” show no real preference regarding the gender of their victims.
While it is true that “many” boys are the victims of exploitation and molestation, no study has ever concluded that boys are molested at higher rates than girls. A University of New Hampshire meta-analysis of 22 separate studies of childhood sexual abuse in America concludes that while 13 percent of boys are victimized during their childhood, the rate for girls was around 30-40 percent. In the vast majority of cases of abuse of female children the perpetrators were male.
Does that fact comment on the behavior of the average heterosexual male?
Recent studies show that “orientation” has little bearing on child predator behavior, indeed that men who abuse boys often have adult heterosexual relationships. Does that mean that heterosexual men are more dangerous to children?
Of course these statistics cannot be taken as gospel because a 2005 Department of Justice victimization study estimates that up to 60 percent of rapes and sexual assaults in general are never reported to police.
But that, I assume Americans for Truth about Homosexuality will claim, has something to do with gays too.
LaBarbera’s challenge to the Southern Poverty Law Center, another group which misstates the truth in pursuit of a political agenda designed to enrich them, is to answer why so many boys are molested. If I were the SPLC I would ask LaBarbera if homosexuals are so much to blame for pedophilia, why are the majority of molestation victims female?
The answer to this is simple – pedophilia is not an orientation or an expression of one. It is a perversion, like blood fetishism or necrophilia, which is found in many types of deviant personalities. In the textbook Profiling Violent Crimes: an Investigative Tool the authors break pedophiles down into two groups, situational and fixated. These categories are further divided into sub-categories.
