Is there such a thing as deficit terrorism? Howard Dean thinks so.

Yesterday, former presidential contender and anti-capitalist Howard Dean expressed serious concern over the federal deficit, saying that, in the long run, the deficit poses a greater danger to the U.S. than al-Qaeda! Of course, this new-found fiscal hawkishness was in reference to Dean’s opposition to tax cuts for the wealthy, and not, say, for unprecedented, unfunded entitlements like universal state-administered health care (which Dean supports). But let’s not dwell.

Among the many gaffes Dean has graced us with over his political career, the most perplexing involve the former Vermont governor’s preoccupation with race. During his 2004 presidential campaign, Dean accused Republicans of attacking the rights of minorities (while lamenting the Bush administration’s divisiveness). At a Democratic National Committee meeting with the Black Congressional Caucus, Dean boasted: “You think the Republican National Committee could get this many people of color in a single room? Only if they had the hotel staff in here.” And this is a man who claims to respect minorities?
