I remember the first time that I read the novel Lord of the Flies. It gave me the same sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach as Orwell’s masterpiece 1984. I recall having a feeling of relief come over me as I turned the final pages on these great works. Finally, I was set free from the ugly worlds created by these novelists. I could return to my American life, where freedom was a birthright and scenarios of power run amok were unthinkable. I remember comforting myself with the thought- “That could never happen here.”
I just finished helping my thirteen year old son edit an essay on Lord of the Flies. I was struck by how the political and social themes of the novel mirror what is currently playing out on the global stage. In the novel, a group of boys is marooned on an island. Fear of the unknown causes the boys to abandon the rules of civilized society for protection under the savage force of power.
As Western style governments across the globe go bankrupt, economic certainty and safety net policies are coming to an end. Fear of the unknown is bringing the survival instinct to the surface. People are screaming for violent uprising in order to assure the continuation of their benefits. Like the boys in the novel, power is being exercised through savage fits of violence. Coincidentally, British students have taken to the streets and are calling for the violent end to the British government.
The suspicious student leaders of this “movement” are calling for the institution of socialism due to a $9,000 tuition increase. Their “enlightened” battle cry is “F**K FEES”. Any American student must be saying “$9,000.oo-is that all?” Their cries for social justice through the redistribution of wealth betray their real cause- not socialism, which is already in practice, but communism.
We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are best at everything.
- William Golding, Lord of the Flies, Ch. 2
Unfortunately, this scenario is not unique. We are watching similar scenes play out in countries like Greece and France. Communist agitators know how to seize an opportunity and recruit useful idiots with free stuff.
America is beginning its own descent into communist agitation with the DREAM Act and the crazed class warfare anger awakened in the heart of progressives over the extension of the Bush Tax Cuts. The communist world vision is based on the false promise of fairness that eventually leads only to shared misery and the loss of freedom. We have seen this play out under Obama. We have been promised that wealth would be taken from the greedy rich and given to the poor and ever exploited “middle class.”
