The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) drafted by the UN in 1948 is insidiously being replaced by the 1990 Cairo Declaration of Human Rights which affirms the Ummah and asserts the place of mankind as “vicegerent of Allah on earth,” leaving the universality of human rights dubious and setting the stage for global governance of a political Islam, rife with an all out assault on free speech.
The OIC has repeatedly called into question the Western right to free speech on the grounds that it incites religious bigotry, hatred and violence against Muslims. In March, the UN Human Rights Council finally passed a resolution to restrict free speech.
While we are not obligated to support the messages of individuals who offend Islam, we have a duty to fully support their right to deliver their messages. How many times have others insulted the name of Christ without fear of a fatwa being declared against them or otherwise being prosecuted by the courts? How many people that have offended Christianity faced the fate of Theo van Gogh and are living under police protection like Ayaan Hirsi Ali?
Elisabeth’s question – “what else has to happen until we finally get it?” – is an outcry that we all need to heed lest we lose what our founding fathers established, and what many young men and women have gone to war and lost their lives to protect: our democratic rights and freedoms. To turn a blind eye is not an option.
