Happy Thanksgiving from the In The Family Way blogging team.

Thanksgiving and Christmas, when you think about it, is a very appropriate way to end a year. Both of these holidays can bring out the best, and worst, in people. But then, that’s our human nature.

Acknowledging our basic human nature is a core principle of our founding, and of conservatism. Over the past year, I have watched this play out in several different ways, both in my personal life and the political arena.

This Thanksgiving, I’m very thankful for the lean years, half-truths, anger and anguish.

Over the years our family have seen some very hard times. We just came out of a decade where I almost lost my husband, which was followed by two years of recovery and unemployment. Within that time our family experienced four different operations, a traumatic birth and a tragic death.

In other words, we lived life.

Life comes in seasons. Our decade long winter has shown promising signs of spring with employment, healing, and restorations. But winter is not without purpose.

When do you appreciate the warmth of the sun more than after the bitter cold? Or when do you appreciate more the company of a friend, than when you are lonely? When do you long for freedom more than when you feel the chains of oppression?

This Thanksgiving I’m thankful for our lean years, because now I can deeply appreciate what we have. I am thankful for the days I was forced to receive, because now I am a cheerful giver.

I’m thankful for the small, but bitter taste of iron that comes from the hand of Leftist’s rule, because it has deepened my respect for the price paid for my freedom- and opened my eyes to how fragile it really is.

Recently I read an old Franciscan benediction that I’d like to share with you:

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in the world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done to bring justice and kindness to all our children and the poor. Amen

Modern Christianity and Western culture whispers that when things are going great, God is on your side. But life has taught me a different lesson– the truth in the heart of that benediction. The Left wants us to believe that we can change the world one government at a time, by creating an easier world for people. History has taught us that change comes through individuals who built their strength through adversity.

So on this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my foolishness, and wish for you all the necessary ingredients that will bestow upon you a thankful heart and a full life.

Happy Thanksgiving
