The Iranian Islamic government is about to execute Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani in Teheran for the crime of committing “adultery” (which presumably occurred after her husband’s death). She was also charged for allegedly conspiring in the death of her husband.

Sakineh’s death is set for tomorrow, November 3. After torturing her for four long years, including lashing her 99 times in the presence of her 17-year-old son, Sakineh’s death is now set for a time when Americans will be totally occupied with our own midterm elections.

The story of her legal ordeal is as byzantine and treacherous as that of Alfred Dreyfus who was falsely accused of treason in France and sentenced to life on Devil’s Island.

Her so-called “confession” was obtained under torture. She was lashed 99 times—twice. Sakineh’s family has been threatened. Her lawyer had to go into hiding. Her sentence: Death by stoning. Her Sharia-compliant death verdict has merely been delayed—never countermanded. How they plan to kill her remains unknown.

UPDATE, 11/3/2010:

The Iranian Foreign Minister (one should not trust him with a song) just told the French Foreign Minister that no decision has been reached about her execution date or about the method of execution. I cannot find out any more than this. This could be disinformation to throw the western activists off; they could be trying to hide the true date of her execution. For all I know, she might have already been murdered. Stay tuned. I will keep looking for us.

Yesterday, at the State Department website, Secretary of State Hillary (women’s rights) Clinton issued a statement that she is “deeply troubled by reports that Iranian authorities are finalizing plans to execute Sakhina Mohammedi Ashtiana. Iran’s leaders have failed once again to protect the fundamental rights of their own citizens particularly women.”

Clinton said the “United States joins with the “international community in calling for Iran to immediately halt any plans for her execution and to handle her case with utmost transparency.” However, she did not announce any plan to sanction Iran if they just happen to go any further.

Nuclear power, state power to torture and execute citizens for crimes they did not commit—nothing has, as yet, roused this administration from its willful slumber.
