1. The Citizens United Decision
The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Associated Press have been wailing that the 2010 midterms are being unfairly swayed by millions of dollars in contributions from anonymous conservative foundations as a result of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. This ruling reversed McCain-Feingold’s Campaign Reform Act and legalized corporations’ ability to exercise their free speech—or, as Joe Conason charmingly calls it, spend their “sewer money.” Meanwhile, President Barack Obama has made ominous insinuations of foreign money pouring into the right-leaning U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Not only were these accusations quickly disproved by The New York Times, they are especially ironic, given the army of anonymous foreign donors who bankrolled Obama’s presidential campaign.
