In fact, the party out of office has almost always demonized the president in one way or another. The only difference now with the speed of media is that you cannot escape it. When newspapers were scarce in places and there was no electronic media-knowledge of the events of the various races was slight. Maybe that is what the older folk remember-that it took longer to find stuff out.
