Who knew that in a nation founded on contempt for government oppression bureaucrats would have the nerve to plan a march to celebrate themselves?

But that’s exactly what some federal government employees are doing. This Saturday in Washington, D.C., the “Government Doesn’t Suck March” will start outside the National Air and Space Museum. According to the Washington Post:

Government workers and their friends and family are encouraged to join up and march together to “put a human face on governmental bureaucracy, to show the country that you’re capable of having a laugh and “to send a reminder that we’re not red tape, we’re not slack-jawed desk jockeys and we don’t suck,” [march organizer Steve] Ressler said.

The march is to coincide with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s useless Rally To Restore Sanity/March To Keep Fear Alive. The ironic tone of  the Stewart/Colbert exercise in futility has miffed many serious progressives in the nation’s capital. Democratic Party operatives in D.C. see this as a crucial election and it bothers them that Hollywood is making light of it, mocking the democratic process by holding what Jerry Seinfeld might call a rally about nothing.

To Democrats, Stewart and Colbert are fiddling while Rome burns. This is, of course, hypocritical since Democratic lawmakers recently invited Colbert to testify before a congressional panel and in so doing mock Congress. They reap what they sow.

While official Washington ignores this pointless apolitical spectacle Arianna Huffington and Oprah Winfrey are trying to inject some seriousness by bussing in delegations of real live activists. Good luck with that.
