A group of Canadian activists is claiming to have raised 100 thousand dollars—a third of its goal—to buy a ship to violate Israel’s blockade of Gaza.  Yet there is no plan to do the same to the Egyptian blockade,  nor to the unjustifiable Turkish blockade against the Greek Cypriots.  What’s more disturbing is that among the groups giving donations and support is the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).  This is the same union that passed a 2006 resolution against Israel as an “Apartheid State” and supported an international campaign of boycott, divestments and sanctions against Israel.  The question of what business CUPE has in Middle East affairs is a baffling one and remains unanswered.

The goals of the “Canadian Boat to Gaza,” according to spokesman Ehab Loyayef, are:

to reach the people of Gaza with much-needed supplies that they are short of, and also to show them the world is not forgetting about them.  Our second important goal is to voice opposition to the position the Canadian government is taking regarding the siege of Gaza, and doing what the Canadian government always seems to do, which is to take the side of Israel.

The “Boat to Gaza”  charade is planned for spring and its motive is primarily political despite what instigators keep reiterating.  While organizers of this violation against Israel  insist that they are not supporting Hamas (officially declared a terrorist organization by Canada and many other countries in the West) they, and others who attack the existence of Israel’s blockade wilfully ignore why this blockade even exists;  it is for the safety of Israel as it faces continuous attack from Hamas.  The Hamas Charter calls for Israel’s obliteration by Islam.  Chief Executive of  the Canada-Israel Committee Simon Fogel rightly called the Canadian Boat to Gaza “an effort to delegitimize Israel and was not only skeptical about the amount of money claimed to be raised so far, but commented on the 300 thousand dollar target.

To mount this kind of operation, where $300,000 [is spent] to take a picture for propaganda purposes, given the real needs within the international community, is as foolish as it is distressing.

Given the tension and volatility in Gaza, it is appalling that CUPE would even involve itself considering that it also represents members vehemently opposed to its erroneous actions.  In 2009, its far left president Syd Ryan created a furor in Canada that extended within his own ranks when he called for an outright boycott of Israeli academics in Canada’s academic institutions.

The Palestinian issue continues to be manipulated and used as a hot button issue eagerly pressed by Islamists toward a larger agenda with auxiliary far leftists in tow.
