SNL’s Brand Of Political Humor

Some conservative commentators such as Sean Hannity have complained that Saturday Night Live’s brand of political humor is distinctly pro-leftist and anti-conservative. They point to the skewering of Sarah Palin by Tina Fey, and to the more recent satirical skits aimed at Delaware’s Republican candidate for the Senate, Christine O’Donnell.

Ann Coulter had a different reaction, which I think is the correct one. As she told Bill O’Reilly Monday night on “The Factor,” SNL’s writers are looking for laughs wherever they can find them. They went after the left-wing publicity seeking lawyer Gloria Allred as the lead-in skit this past Saturday night, for example. And they have not shied away from lampooning Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, and New York’s governors  Elliot Spitzer and David Patterson.

Once the left-wing ideologue Al Franken left SNL as writer and performer, things definitely improved on the show. Unfortunately, Minnesota and the U.S. Senate have suffered.

The best thing for politicians to do is to go along for the ride and learn to laugh at themselves and others while performing in their own skits on SNL. I suggest that Christine O’Donnell ask to appear for SNL’s Halloween show and ride in on a broom to sweep all the dirt and waste out of Washington D.C.

We need some humor during the campaign season, so long as the last laugh is at the Left’s expense on Election Day.

Joseph A. Klein is the author of a new book entitled Lethal Engagement: Barack Hussein Obama, the United Nations and Radical Islam.
