Listen Up! New Music Releases – October 12, 2010

The Band Perry, The Band Perry (Republic Nashville)
NewsRealRating: **** ½ (out of 5 stars)

If there’s a voice in country music that poses a threat to the supremacy of Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, it is Kimberly Perry, lead singer for The Band Perry. Kimberly has the same power and unstoppable range. The Band Perry just achieved their first gold single last week (that’s 500,000 downloads) for the single, “If I Die Young.” They’ve followed up with a self-titled album (featuring that song) that is sure to do the same.

The Band Perry consists of siblings Kimberly Perry on lead vocals and piano, Reid Perry on bass guitar and Neil Perry on mandolin and drums, and they are the most refreshing thing to come along in country music since Taylor Swift (back when she was singing “Tim McGraw”). Their musical style is sexy-yet-innocent, and they are an obviously virtuoso set of musicians. From the tracks on this debut album, it seems clear that Kimberly Perry is the vocalist for the group. It will be interesting to see if future albums distribute the vocal duties to either of the brothers.

This is a solid debut from The Band Perry, and it makes them a group that has now officially arrived. Country music should welcome them with open arms. Following in the path of Taylor Swift, their young voices blend well with the youthful themes of their songs. Is there a more teenage-romantic ballad than their hit “If I Die Young”? It is played and sung with considerable expertise (and feeling).

Download these tracks:

“You Lie” – What is it about her voice that just reminds me of frosting? She is the singer is the lead of this obviously talented threesome that offers a rocking and different sound than the straight harmonies of similar bands.

“Hip To My Heart” – This exuberant and playful invitation to a possible new relationship will no doubt put The Band Perry right where you can find them for albums to come – on constant radio airplay.

“If I Die Young” – The song is titled “If I Die Young,” and it is a simple song that manages to evoke all the Southern romanticism-turned-upside-down of an unrecorded Lady Antebellum lyric set to a more heart-wrenching melody. And yet there is nothing old-fashioned about it.

“Independence” – When Kimberly Perry declares “independence is busting out of me,” there’s an almost early-Martina McBride inevitability about it all.

“Postcard From Paris” – This gorgeous song glides by on a set of bluesy tones, giving Kimberly Perry the chance to melt our hearts as she describes what the pain of “the real thing” can be like as she soars above all the pain of love.
