3) She is the very model of grace and courtesy in her appearances with other guests on talk shows. It’s not all about her. She complements others and allows them to shine while in her presence, something many celebrities seem incapable of. She is respectful and shows a willingness to listen to other points of view.
4) Her approach to the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” issue has been exemplary. Her recent 7-minute YouTube video, in which she encouraged her fans to call their senators and ask them to support repeal of the measure, was remarkable in its temperate, dignified tone and avoidance of histrionics. She walked her fans, most of whom are undoubtedly political neophytes, through the process while modeling courtesy and calm determination. When was the last time you recall a leftist showing such restraint? It’s also notable that Gaga completely avoids the victimhood argument. Her appeal is made on the basis of equality under the law. Her recent appearance in Maine at a rally to encourage that state’s senators to vote in favor of the measure’s repeal exhibited the same virtues. She again made her case in a forceful but dignified manner.
5) At last year’s gay and lesbian March for Equality, Gaga, alone among the event’s speakers, shook her fist at Obama and called him out for his failure to make good on his promises to the gay community. Unlike many gay leftists, she is refusing to remain silent in the face of what one of my good friends calls Obama’s “I’ll get around to it when hell freezes over” timetable.
6) Especially given the fact that she’s only 24, Lady Gaga is showing amazing clearheadedness in the way she is handling her sudden wealth and fame. She’s making an effort to be and to do good, and does so with a wry sense of humor. Who could fail to love the meat dress she wore to the recent VMA awards? One can hardly imagine a more stunning and creative rebuke to PETA’s criticism. This along with her encouragement of individualism and taking responsibility for changing one’s own life indicates to me an essentially conservative mindset.
7) From a social media standpoint, no can begin to hold a candle to Gaga. She reached 10 million ‘fans’ on Facebook before Obama, is now the most followed person in the world on Twitter, and was the first person to get more than one billion views on YouTube. Say what you will about the relative unimportance of media figures, this woman has significant influence among a large young demographic. To the extent that she espouses conservative ideas, she deserves our support and encouragement.
