The Tea Party movement has been an immense force for good in promoting political accountability and instilling in the American people a renewed interest in the principles of our Founding Fathers, but I confess that I’ve always been a bit troubled by certain libertarian strains within the movement regarding social issues and foreign policy. Fortunately, earlier this week the Daily Beast’s John Avlon identified the latest batch of Republican primary victories, aided in large part by Sarah Palin’s endorsement, as a sign that support for the right to life is alive and well on the Right.

Of course, being a stale left-wing drama queen, Avlon doesn’t see this as something to celebrate:

It’s worth pointing out the obvious hypocrisy given the Tea Party’s views of government—it’s hard to imagine a more direct imposition on individual freedom than for the state to force a girl to carry her rapist’s baby for nine months.  It’s even crueler if that baby is her father’s child.

The hypocrisy only exists in Avlon’s mind—if abortion is a violation of the right to life (and it most certainly is), then it’s a violation of the right to life regardless of the circumstances of the pregnancy. But don’t take my word for it; take pro-choice blogger Zombie’s:

If you truly are “pro-life” in that you believe abortion is murder because the unborn child is a full-fledged human being, then you wouldn’t so casually allow the child to be murdered simply based on its parent’s misbehavior […] Why then, if we are to accept the supposition that unborn children have full human rights, would we sentence a (pre-born) baby to death (abortion) simply because the baby’s father is a rapist?

Avlon continues:

There’s a growing gap between the Tea Party’s talk about representing libertarian principles and many of their candidates acting as Trojan Horses for social conservative activist causes.

Now, I rip on libertarians a lot, and there are certainly plenty of so-called “libertarians” running around who are really social leftists who just want to keep the government away from their wallets. But to be fair, there are also many sincere libertarians who understand that their philosophy of preserving and maximizing individual human liberty applies to the fetus in the womb every bit as much as to the shopkeeper on the corner. (To be extra super duper fair, I’ll also point out that even modern libertarianism’s patron saint, the conspiratorial Lincoln-hating appeaser Ron Paul, is pro-life and has introduced solid pro-life legislation in Congress.)
