In the piece alleging “Israel Doesn’t Care About Peace,” Vick demonstrates a fatally simplistic view of Islam.

Asked in a March poll to name the “most urgent problem” facing Israel, just 8% of Israeli Jews cited the conflict with Palestinians, putting it fifth behind education, crime, national security and poverty. Israeli Arabs placed peace first, but among Jews here, the issue that President Obama calls “critical for the world” just doesn’t seem — critical.

To conclude Jews do not value peace as much as Arabs, simply because the conflict with Palestinians ranks fifth in an priority poll, is the apex of specious reasoning. It assumes all parties view peace the same way. In the 2006 documentary film Islam: What the West Needs to Know, former Palestinian Liberation Organization Fatah Brigade operative Walid Shoebat explains how his former faith views peace.

[As an Islamist] you concede to peace when you are the weaker party. This is why you hear the term hudna. Hudna is a peace treaty, cease-fire. In Iraq, [Muqtada al-]Sadr asked for hudna, because he knew he can’t defeat Americans. You have hudnas all over when the enemy is stronger than you are. But as soon as you gain strength, then you don’t concede for peace.

This is why the face of Islamic fundamentalism in the West has a facade that Islam is a peaceful religion, because they are waiting to have more Islamic immigrants. They’re waiting to increase in number, waiting to increase in political power. And once they do, then look out. You’ll see the real face of Islamic fundamentalism here in America.

In the same film, Defeating Jihad author Serge Trifkovic elaborates upon the meaning of peace in Islam.

Both communism and Islam seek the end of history in this world. The end of history will come when either the whole of our planet becomes [submissive to] Islam, or else when the proletariat revolution brings the avant garde of the working class to power all over the world, which will be the end of state, the end of money, and the end of class oppression. In both cases, it is possible to have a period of truce. It is possible to have what would be called in modern parlance “peaceful co-existence.” But that peaceful co-existence is a tactical ploy, and not a permanent solution.

Given this historically evident conception of peace in Islam, perhaps those Jews who participated in the Time poll simply don’t believe true peace is an achievable goal. That would not mean they don’t care about peace.
