During World War II Hollywood became a place of pro-American and anti-Fascist sentiments. The line was drawn between good and evil. Even the Communist Left in Hollywood knew how to fight against true enemies with films emphatically standing against Fascism (see Fritz Lang’s Man Hunt). Today, it is often difficult to tell what is more important in Hollywood, ideology or money. The debate continues, but we do know that political pressure ruled all in the case of the ABC miniseries The Path to 9/11.

Today there is still a fight between the filmmakers, investors looking to buy the DVD rights, the public that wants to see the film again and Bob Iger of Disney who keeps squashing any hope of releasing or airing the miniseries ever again. The film aired in September of 2006, but almost didn’t thanks to the Clinton Machine that was deeply afraid of the truths the film might tell. So they used their only defense and cried “conservative bias” as loud as possible. A new Facebook group has been designated to fighting this battle, please join here.

Newsreal Blog’s own Mark Tapson worked on the film and responds to ABC’s decision to hide this project:

“Disney President and CEO Robert Iger explains without elaboration that it’s a “business decision.” Oh, well then, case closed. Not only does he refuse to re-air The Path to 9/11 or release a DVD, but he has no intention of even selling the DVD rights to another company. I’m no financial wizard, but I can recognize that, as business decisions go, willfully taking a $30+ million bath on your product when there is a vast audience hungry for it and distributors making offers, is not one of the more lucrative marketing strategies I’ve ever heard of.”

I am lucky enough to have a copy of the unavailable The Path to 9/11, provided by the film’s writer/producer Cyrus Nowrasteh. It has been a long time since I’ve been so refreshed after watching a film. The brutal honesty in The Path To 9/11 is unrivaled in Hollywood. The story chronicles all of the problems and mistakes that lead to 9/11. There is no partisanship here; we see the faults of both the Clinton and Bush administration as well as the FBI, CIA among other organizations. The film is extremely well researched and organized. This is not a hatchet job on our national defense teams, but instead more of a tool we can use to help understand how important it is to continue the fight to keep our country safe.

This film gets harder to watch as it progresses; it wrenches your heart from every angle putting you in the trade center towers, in the hijacked planes, on the ground both near and far from Ground Zero. It’s not easy, but it’s the truth, the honest facts about 9/11 and the path to it are not easy to swallow. They never will be. This is what happened; the film forces us to feel the way we did on that horrible day in 2001. Seeing it today only further solidifies the drive we must have to stop something like this from ever happening again. This drive has unfortunately faded in some that wish to forget who are true enemies are.
