Is this the Great Commission?

I am on record for being against the Florida Koran burning.  I was one of the first people to ever write on the topic (which I did August 1st for another NewsReal Sunday blog).  Countless major Christian organizations spoke against torching the Muslim holy book, including the two biggest in America – the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptist Convention.  But there is a big difference between arguing that burning Korans is not Christian and actually promoting Islam itself.

Many Christians, predominantly of the Religious Left, have come out defending and even advocating the spread of Islam.  I guess the shame of someone claiming to be a pastor that threatens to burn holy books was too much for them to bear.  Somehow these Christian lightweights have decided Islamic evangelism was the right response.

In Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Bible Society declared they would hand out two Korans for every one burned by the Florida church.  Yes, that’s right.  An organization supposedly committed to Christianity has now committed to spread Islam.  Of course the Huffington Post thought it was a beautiful story of Christian love.  The Huffpost heralded the press release of MassBible.

“As people of the Book, we are joined to Islam and Judaism in a special way and as an organization that has sought to put that Book into people’s hands for 201 years, we cannot stand idly by while the sacred text of a sister religion is burned as our beloved Bibles once were.” – MassBible

A church in downtown Charleston, SC gave a gift of a whole bunch of Korans to a mosque there in the city.  And on 9-11 a church in Raleigh, NC put together an interfaith gathering to read excerpts of the Koran in their church building.  Right in the heart of the Bible-belt we see active promoting of Islam by Christians.  Maybe they hope it will one day become the Koran-belt.  Somehow those Christians think giving out and reading another religion’s holy book is part of the Great Commission that Christ gave.  Not sure how you can make that argument theologically when you read Jesus’ words.

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

Jesus commissioned his church to spread the gospel – Christ crucified and resurrected for our sins that we might have eternal life.  In the New Testament, when disciples would enter lands of other gods they never promoted those other gods.  The disciples always let the people know, in a loving way, that they were missing the truth of the one, true God.  To spread any other religion is to deny the Great Commission, the gospel, and Jesus Christ.

No matter how ashamed you might be of so-called pastors like Terry Jones or others, the Christian response is never to be ashamed of the gospel itself.  Yet advocating for Islam instead of the gospel shows nothing more than shame and self-loathing.  Christians should have the attitude of the Apostle Paul who wrote:

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. Romans 1:16

There are many other examples of Christians all but giving up their faith to champion Islam in our nation these days.  However, it is possible to be against hatred toward other religions and still stand up for Christ who said that He was the only way to God.  If we do not stand for the gospel we might eventually become a country of people bowing toward Mecca.
