Who would’ve thought of the possibility that the next American hero would come riding up to save the day in a stretch limousine, armed with a wall of hair and a massive checkbook? It almost happened Thursday, as Donald Trump made a $6 million dollar effort to purchase the site of the proposed Ground Zero Mosque.

When I saw the crawl on Fox News Thursday, I couldn’t believe my eyes, but other sources confirm: in a letter sent to Hisham Elzanaty, who claims to have a majority ownership stake in the site, The Donald made an offer to buy the Park Place property. He’s offering $6 million, or 25% more than Elzanaty reportedly paid for the site.

Trump said:

I am making this offer as a resident of New York and a citizen of the United States, not because I think the location is a spectacular one (because it is not), but because it will end a very serious, inflammatory and highly divisive situation that is destined, in my opinion, to only get worse.

Trump’s attempt to put his (considerable) money where his (even more considerable) mouth is was impressive, but apparently not to Elzanaty, who rejected the offer almost immediately. His lawyer explained:

Is he a savior now? Donald Trump? I don’t know anything that he saved before. He’s just trying to recapture the limelight and get into a situation that he doesn’t really know anything about. This is not a serious offer, and frankly Mr. Elzanaty is sort of disappointed, because he considers this an insult to him.

Elzanaty is holding out for $20 million, and he won’t settle for less. Trump appeared on CNBC Friday morning and referred to Elzanaty as a “low level real estate guy without any money…looking to flip” the property. Trump, who considers himself a “big believer in freedom of religion,” made his offer for one reason, which happens to be a reason shared by 70% of the American people: he thinks a mosque located mere blocks from Ground Zero is a bad idea.
