In fact, Grossman doesn’t even attempt to do so. Nothing in her blog mentions one single word of evidence that either Beck or Wright, for that matter, are prophets of hate. Her article can be summed up this way: Beck now presents “himself as a theologian.” He talks about the problems with Liberation Theology and uses Jeremiah Wright as an example. Grossman then argues there is nothing wrong with Liberation Theology and that Wright’s theology isn’t what made him unique. What made Wright unique was he was a prophet to society, and now Beck is claiming to be some new sort of prophet to society.
Of course Grossman doesn’t say the men are equal in their prophetic authority. Wright is a prophet from “the tradition of prophecy, in which, Scripture teaches, God sends critical voices forward to correct society.” Beck, on the other hand, is “a self-appointed prophet” talking about “his vision of America’s need for God.”
It seems to me that Grossman doesn’t think that both men are angry prophets after all. She thinks Wright is a prophet and Beck is just angry. Look at the two pictures of the men in her article.
Now you tell me, which man looks angry and who looks calm, cool, and collected?
Back in 2008 when Wright became a problem for Obama, many in the press made a concerted effort to either stop talking about the topic or to find a way to defend Wright. USA Today‘s Grossman was one who went to bat for Wright. She wrote an article claiming that people’s dislike of Wright was merely because they didn’t get his style. If people only knew he was being a prophetic voice for black America then they’d understand his words and not find them hateful.
What is so surprising about Grossman’s latest Wright article is not just that she compares Beck to Wright, but it is that Beck comes off as far worse. Wright is misunderstood and thoughtful. Beck is a false prophet and hateful.
Does the mainstream media have any clue how left of mainstream America they really are? Maybe the press needs a prophet calling them back to what they were supposed to be.
