“They Shoot, And We Build”

The Times called the war in Iraq “a tragic, pointless war.”

Tragic, yes. Any loss of life is tragic. But to say that the Iraq war was pointless is a dishonor to our soldiers. It represents a complete misunderstanding of the worldwide struggle against Islamic terrorism in which Iraq, for a time, was the front line. We were victorious, and Obama should have proclaimed it.

Instead, Obama has never apologized for opposing the surge that brought us victory, although he has little hesitation in apologizing to the world for America’s supposed misdeeds – as he did last year to Muslims in his Cairo speech and on the global stage at the United Nations.

Obama also omitted mention of Iran, the extremist Islamic theocracy that is hard at work developing a nuclear arms capability and supporting Islamic terrorist groups. Iran lies between the two fronts in our war against Islamic terrorism and is helping our enemies in both countries.

Finally, Obama could have said something about how Islamic terrorism must be defeated if his hopes for a meaningful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are to be achieved during the direct negotiations he is launching today. Obama should have said that we will never push our ally Israel into agreeing to sacrifice its right to live in security as a Jewish state, because their struggle against Islamic extremists is also our struggle. But he did not.

In short, Obama’s speech lacked the eloquence and relevance of those five simple words – “They Shoot, And We Build.”

Joseph Klein is the author of a new book entitled Lethal Engagement: Barack Hussein Obama, the United Nations and Radical Islam, which is available now for pre-order on Amazon.com.
