Obama is Trying to Convince You That Withdrawal From Iraq Isn’t Victory for Iran

On August 23, Vice President Biden made the monumentally stupid statement that “Iranian influence in Iraq is minimal. It’s been greatly exaggerated.” The remark shows a profound misunderstanding of how the region works and as I’ll explain in a forthcoming Pajamas Media article, is very damaging. Without even realizing it, Biden vindicated Iran’s proxy strategy.

At first, I thought this was just Biden running his mouth off again. But then I saw this report that Ambassador to Iraq James Jeffrey said that Iranian influence isn’t as strong in Iraq as is assumed. Depending on who is doing the assuming, that statement could be accurate as Iraq’s Shiites are not as pro-Iran as some commentators make it sound. But, if you notice that Jeffrey said this after Biden described Iran’s influence as “minimal,” it appears that Obama Administration officials are making a concerted effort to reject claims that Iraq is falling into Iran’s orbit. Why? Because one of the major criticisms of the withdrawal from Iraq is that it will cede the country to Iran.

Unfortunately for the Obama Administration, they are contradicted by their own generals who have repeatedly described the lengths to which Iran goes to destabilize Iraq and kill our soldiers and Iraqis. Ambassador Jeffrey isn’t living in a dream world—he says that he estimates that up to one-fourth of our casualties in Iraq “can be traced without doubt to these Iranian groups.” And that doesn’t even take into account the groups that Iran supports more secretly without definite traces.

So how can Ambassador Jeffrey and our generals say Iran is responsible for a major part of the violence in Iraq yet Vice President and the same Jeffrey can say Iranian influence is overblown? The timing of the statements strongly indicates that the Obama Administration is trying to undermine critics of the withdrawal. Let’s see how many detonated Iranian bombs it takes for the argument to fall apart.
