Hamas Kills 4 Israelis: It’s On Like Donkey Kong

Hamas has taken responsibility for shooting four Israeli civilians to death in the West Bank. The timing of the attack, more than the attack itself, shows the evil of Hamas. These Israelis were not soldiers engaged in combat. They were not hurting anyone. They just committed the sin of being Jewish.

The timing and location of the attack are important. This comes soon after Israel and the Palestinian Authority announced they’ll hold direct talks. The location was in the West Bank where the P.A. reigns. It doesn’t take much thought to figure out the short-term goal of this attack (the long-term being the destruction of Israel): They want to sabotage the peace process. Hamas wants to force the Palestinian Authority to either fight them in the West Bank or accept their presence, leading to a confrontation with Israel.

Either way, Hamas is hoping to compel the Palestinian Authority to back out of the peace talks either by scaring them into submission or provoking a fight. It is also in Iran’s interest, as the government is unstable because of its unpopularity with the majority of Iranians. There is also a split in the Iranian government with the speaker of the Majiles clashing with President Ahmadinejad, forcing the intervention of Ayatollah Khamenei. A foreign crisis might be just what the regime needs to hold its ranks together.

One final point: As Aaron Klein points out, the shooting happened on a road where the Israeli government dismantled a checkpoint under U.S. pressure. These checkpoints are not barriers to peace, they are contributions to peace. And, I might add, the stability these measures bring are good for the economic well-being of the Palestinians in the West Bank.

Expect Israel to retaliate soon and expect the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Islamic Society of North America to condemn them for it. When asked to condemn Hamas, they’ll say something like, “we condemn all violence and terrorism.” Same stuff, different day.
