It’s 3pm, your eyelids are getting heavy and you need a jolt of something to get you through the rest of the day.  Instead of a cup of coffee, soda, or a Red Bull, slap on some headphones and crank up Fang Island’s self-titled album.  This album is bursting with explosive energy; just over 30 minutes of mostly-instrumental uplifting guitar-heavy rock.  The sparse vocals on the album are mostly “ooh’s” and “ahh’s”, which you’ll find yourself immediately “singing” along with.  The band describes their own sound as “everyone high-fiving everyone.” This video of them playing at a kindergarten embodies that idea perfectly, I think.

Heavy Guitar rock these days is usually reserved for angst-filled teens wearing too-tight black jeans and eyeliner, or burnt-out old hair rockers desperately trying to recapture their glory days (oddly enough also wearing too-tight jeans and  eyeliner), but this album is pure unadulterated joy that I think any rock fan would love.  If someone were to write a sequel to Top Gun, this should be the soundtrack.

The only drawback to this album is that the tracks are somewhat hard to differentiate, but it certainly makes for good driving music or background music at a Barbeque.  If pressed, I’d choose “Daisy”, “The Illinois,” and “Treeton” as the standout tracks.  Pick up this album now for some real musical fireworks.
