Once upon a time, Fox News political analyst Kirsten Powers had a reputation as a relatively sane, responsible Democrat. Partisan and misleading, yes, but that comes with the territory; at least Powers was less strident and angry than the average leftist—certainly no character assassin.

This image has never been entirely true, but yesterday, Powers demonstrated once and for all that, deep down, she’s as duplicitous as they come. Writing on the Daily Beast, Powers purports to condemn the Republican Party’s “Long, Hot, Racist Summer”:

Leave it to GOP darling Sarah Palin to turn up the heat with a bizarre defense of the hateful Dr. Laura’s “n-word” rant.

In a rambling Facebook post, the former Alaska governor asked incredulously: “Does anyone seriously believe that Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a racist?”

Why, yes, Sarah. Yes, we do.

The incident which led to the end of Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s radio show was a poorly-considered attempt to make a legitimate point about the n-word’s prevalence within black popular culture. That Powers deems this sufficient evidence to declare Schlessinger a racist tells us more about Powers than it does about her victim.

This incident is instructive, because it bears the hallmark of many GOP blunders in the area of race. Palin truly cannot understand why anyone would think that Dr. Laura is racist, or why Palin’s defense of her is disgusting. In Palin’s world, apparently this kind of behavior is acceptable, which tells us quite a bit, actually.

By suggesting that Palin saw nothing wrong with the incident, Powers is simply lying. In the note, Palin says, “Though she did not mean to insult the caller, she did, and she apologized for it.” Palin is clearly defending Dr. Laura’s intentions, not her words. Ironically, Powers is exactly the sort of “people who play games with false accusations, threats, frivolous lawsuits, misreporting, etc., in an effort to silence those with whom they disagree” to whom Palin was referring.

It’s the same world in which a single incident in a single voting precinct in Philadelphia in 2008 has become a rallying cry among conservatives who see black racism against white people lurking behind every bush.

The obsession is focused on two members of the “New Black Panther Party” who stood outside a majority black voting precinct and got into an argument with some white Republican “poll watchers” whom they called “crackers.” One NBP member was holding a billy club. The “New Black Panther Party,” which has no relation to the original, denounced the two men. Conservatives complain that if they had been Ku Klux Klan members, liberals would be screaming.

Actually, the significance of the Panther case was never the crime itself, but the reaction by the people we’re supposedly paying to deal with that sort of thing. As Peter Kirsanow explains, we have credible testimony from multiple former Justice Department attorneys alleging the DOJ’s disinterest in prosecuting cases in which whites are the victims. Of course, Powers already knows this—Megyn Kelly explained it to her over a month ago. Hmm, I wonder why someone would insist on sticking to discredited arguments…

Here is a little history lesson: When the KKK showed up at a polling station in the South, black people would have rejoiced if the worst thing that happened to them was name-calling. The KKK came for one reason: to torture and kill blacks, which they did by the thousands.

It’s no big deal that some people do bad stuff today, because other people did worse stuff yesterday. Yeah, that makes sense.
