Rauf was actually repeating what he had already written in one of his books for all to see. In 2004 Rauf’ wrote in his book What’s Right With Islam is What’s Right With America,
“[The] American Constitution and system of governance uphold the core principles of Islamic law… (and the) American political structure is sharia-compliant.”
“But it is important that we understand what is meant by Shariah law. Islamic law is about God’s law, and it is not that far from what we read in the Declaration of Independence…At the core of Shariah law are God’s commandments, revealed in the Old Testament and revised in the New Testament and the Quran. The principles behind American secular law are similar to Shariah law.” – Rauf
In that article Rauf goes on to argue that some cultures simply have a stricter penal code for Sharia law and all it needs is a bit of modern revision. He believes Muslims need Sharia in America to guarantee their rights here.
I wonder if Rauf can offer up any examples of Muslim countries where Sharia law does not lead to the beating, stoning, and sometimes killing of girls, women, and converts to Christianity. And how can he argue on one hand that militant Muslims must learn that the original meaning of Sharia isn’t violent and then on the other hand say the solution is for Sharia to get a modern penal code? Which does he want: old style Sharia or a liberal modern understanding of Sharia? You cannot have it both ways.
It is clear that one of the goals of the mosque at Ground Zero is to help usher in Sharia law into America. No matter how foolish and naive’ Rauf’s beliefs about Sharia are, there is no doubt that he is a huge proponent of it. Let the Ground Zero mosque supporters be silenced by such a revelation. If you do not support Sharia then you must not support this mosque.
