Assuming President Obama holds another press conference sometime before the end of his first and only term, it is possible that members of the press corps (that’s pronounced “core” Mr. President) – having carefully gauged the darkening mood of the electorate—might pull themselves up to their full height and escalate their tone from “fawning” to “fawning with a soupcon of petulance.” Nobody much is holding his breath however since any sign of life from this group seems about as likely as Robert Gibbs delivering two coherent answers back to back.

We can dream however (at least until Washington figures out of way to tax it), so in the spirit of fantasy football here are some of the best questions the press corps never asked.

10. Mr. President, in response to suggestions that you’re unduly influenced by a personal background and current inner circle that seems to have more than its share of radical Leftists, you have described yourself as a fierce free market advocate. This appears to be at odds with how you describe yourself in “Dreams from My Father.”

To avoid being mistaken for a [racial] sellout, I chose my friends carefully. The more politically active black students. The foreign students. The Chicanos. The Marxist professors and structural feminists and punk-rock performance poets. We smoked cigarettes and wore leather jackets. At night, in the dorms, we discussed neocolonialism, Franz Fanon, Eurocentrism, and patriarchy. [P. 75]

It also seems to contradict statements you made in an interview in 2001 in which you depicted the U.S. Constitution as lacking insofar as it does not provide for the redistribution of wealth and suggested this could be handled legislatively.

Can you point us to a speech, transcript, published work or anything else in the public domain that describes the turning point in your thinking?
