Speaking at the annual White House Ramadan dinner last week before a Muslim audience, President Obama expressed support for the proposed construction of the mega mosque complex near Ground Zero known as Cordoba House.

The next day he retreated somewhat in the face of a firestorm of intense criticism. Obama told reporters in Florida during his photo-op mini-vacation on the Gulf Coast that he meant only to say that Muslims have the same religious freedoms under the Constitution as any one else, but was not commenting on the wisdom of building the mosque and community center so close to Ground Zero.

Apparently, either Obama himself or his advisors realized overnight that he had gone too far politically in publicly spitting in the faces of the bereaved families of those who perished on 9/11. But the damage was done.

Some commentators, like Bill O’Reilly on “The O’Reilly Factor,” said that the President was ducking the real issue. Few opponents of the Cordoba House argue that its Muslim-American sponsors do not have the constitutional right to build it on private property they own or lease, so long as all local laws and regulations are complied with.

Thus, the President did not need to lecture us on the requirements of the First Amendment. The real issue is the lack of decency and respect for the feelings of the sponsors’ fellow Americans concerning a very painful episode in American history.
