3. Spencer Ackerman. Liberal fascism and the thirst for violence course deeply through the veins of the JournOlists. We see it in the vulgarity and profanity that laces their comments, their desire for the death of Rush Limbaugh and other political conservatives, and their glorification of violence as a means to settle political disputes.

One of the biggest JournOlistic thugs is Spencer Ackerman who said this about Michael Ledeen:

Let’s just throw Ledeen against a wall. Or, pace Dr. Alterman, throw him through a plate-glass window. I’ll bet a little spot of violence would shut him right the fuck up, as with most bullies.

Ledeen, of course, is no bully. He’s a mild-mannered scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who writes books and articles on behalf of peaceful democratic reform in Iran.

Nowhere in this thread does Ackerman indicate that he is speaking metaphorically and not literally. In a second thread, Ackerman does say that he is speaking “rhetorically.” Still, his words are chilling.

What is necessary is to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. In other words, find a right-winger’s [sic] and smash it through a plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear. Obviously I mean this rhetorically.

It’s actually not obvious, especially since Ackerman makes other vituperative comments. He shares, for instance, the fascistic urge to smear and discredit political opponents with vicious lies and innuendo. For example, according to the Daily Caller:

Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent urged his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with Wright by changing the subject [and lying]. Pick one of Obama’s conservative critics, Ackerman wrote, ‘Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.

‘Ask: why do they have such a deep-seated problem with a black politician who unites the country? What lurks behind those problems? This makes *them* sputter with rage, which in turn leads to overreaction and self-destruction.'”

Ackerman at least has apologized directly to Ledeen. However, there does not appear to be any remorse on his part for his role in coordinating and directing “mainstream” news coverage for expressly partisan political purposes. Moreover, Ackerman has since been promoted to a new and better paying job at Wired magazine’s influential Danger Room defense blog.
