Michelle Obama has been acting more like a frivoulous queen than a concerned first lady while her country is suffering an economic downturn.  The jet-setting high-life the Obama’s live (and flaunt for the cameras) has many Americans saying the First Lady is living it up like Marie Antoinette despite her demands that fellow countrymen need to start pinching pennies like peasants.

As more than 200,000 American jobs disappeared this summer, and businesses have collapsed since Obama took office, Mrs. Obama snubbed American-owned resorts—which could use the money and publicity she generates—for a European vacation costing tens of thousands per day.

No one begrudges the First Family their vacations, but the Obama’s have chastised Americans for spending money since Barry took office, telling Americans we have lived too lavishly and need to tighten our belts:

When times are tough, you tighten your belts.  You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage.  You don’t blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.  You prioritize.  You make tough choices.

While Americans make tough choices, Mrs. Obama has done the opposite: she has chosen eight tough vacations this summer.

Americans don’t want the First Lady condemning extravagant spending and living when she splurges lavishly on America’s tax dollars like a French Queen.

Andrea Tantaros of the New York Daily News said the problem is not that Mrs. Obama is vacationing, it’s how, where, and on whose dime:

[W]hile most of the country is pinching pennies and downsizing summer sojourns—or forgoing them altogether—the Obamas don’t seem to be heeding their own advice.  While many of us are struggling, the First Lady is spending the next few days in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her ‘closest friends…[plus 70 Secret Service Agents]’ Not exactly what one would call cutting back in troubled times.  Reports are calling the lodgings of  Obama’s Spanish fiesta, the Hotel Villa Padierna in Marbella, ‘luxurious,’ ‘posh’ and ‘a millionaires’ playground…’” that cost $2,000 dollars per night.

Peter Baker and Raphael  Minder of The New York Times hit back at Tantaros criticism of Mrs. Obama’s trip, saying:

Every First lady in modern times has flown on government planes with a sizable security detail, and it is hard to pinpoint the cost to taxpayers…Laura Bush took vacations without her husband each year of George W. Bush’s presidency, traveling with her Secret Service detail on a government plane to meet friends for camping in national parks.  But that never generated as much furor, in part because vacationing in the United States is not as politically delicate for American leaders and their families as doing so in foreign countries.
