Back in May, I took apart an empty, shameful attempt to smear Sean Hannity and one of his guests as racists by NewsHounds blogger Priscilla. Yesterday, Priscilla referenced that post in an attack on pro-Fox News blog Johnny Dollar’s Place:
On another note, one of Mr. Dollar’s posters appends, after many of his comments about News Hounds, his comic “News Hounds New Slogan.” Although it looks like it’s his original comment, it really comes from a conservative writer on a David Horowitz blog. Calvin Freiburger made this comment in a thread on “News Real Blog“, about what a nasty bad librul I am in daring to criticize what appears to be an anti-Hispanic bias on the part of Sean Hannity. Our “new slogan” has no quotes or attribution connected to it. While Mr. Dollar seems to be obsessed with critiquing News Hounds as “Fox Haters,” (part of a growing trend), he should advise his contributor about plagiarism.
The contributor supposedly took the following comment by me and tried to pass it off as his own:
[F]eign outrage that anyone would dare to voice a conservative opinion, attribute such views to a horrible personal flaw or ulterior motive without bothering refute anything on the merits, and throw in just enough factual window-dressing to make the whole thing seem plausible.
My first instincts were to reject the accusation based on two factors: 1.) Taking the word of the petty, factually-challenged hyper-partisans at NewsHounds at face value seems unwise, especially given the staggering dishonesty of Priscilla’s original post, 2.) Priscilla didn’t provide a link to the “plagiarism.” Gee, if J$P writers were passing off the work of others as their own, you’d think a link to the offending post would be in order.
Johnny Dollar’s Mark Koldys has directed me to the post in question, which reveals why Priscilla opted for a closely-cropped screen capture rather than a link: The line wasn’t in a post at all, but in a comment, and obviously, expecting any well-read blog to screen every single comment for every conceivable bit of misconduct would be insane. As far as I’m concerned, this would be enough to fully clear J$P, but it turns out that’s not all: Priscilla’s cropping prevents NewsHounds’ readers from seeing that the plagiarism charge was refuted in that very thread. The commenter never claimed to be the author, which several J$P commenters corroborate.
So, to recap: a story about conservative bloggers plagiarizing the work of others turns out to really be a story about leftist bloggers withholding information from their readers to smear people they disagree with. Imagine that. Oh, and Priscilla? Now that I know you read NewsRealBlog, I’d like to remind you that you didn’t actually refute a word of my May 26 post. Just, y’know, in case you’re interested in adding some substance to the smears…
