One of the conclusions reached in Unholy Alliance is that contemporary leftism is, in fact, largely a nihilism. Since the collapse of socialism – and really since the collapse of the international Communist monolith after the Khrushchev Report – the left hasn’t had a coherent unifying agenda. What is left is nihilism – anti-globalization, anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobia form the legions of the left in our time.
Homosexual marriage is favored by the Left because of this nihilistic instinct, because of its potential to dismantle a natural-law-based, Judeo-Christian Civilization. Monogamous, heterosexual, child-centered marriage is the building block of the Left-detested real world it is bent on annihilating.
Jamie Glazov, presenting his work, United In Hate, describes the Left as having an almost animalistic attraction to the “”blood spilled by the Revolution.” By this, he meant that the Left was instinctively drawn to support and champion any cause or group that would aid in the destruction of the Civilization that, by its nature, was opposed to the new Leftist utopia.
A ruling that declares the State to be indifferent to the fruit of the family has struck the heart of the Left’s enemy. The practical conclusion is that self-contained gratification is of equal value as children.
Nihilism is advanced by the homosexual marriage debate because it affords the Left with “proof” of the evils of America. Far from being superior to other cultures, we still persecute the “other,” we are shown to be religious obscurantists, bigots, and even hypocrites since we criticize Islamic countries in which homosexuals are hung, but outlaw homosexual marriage. The Left deftly convinces Americans that only by shedding their traditional morals will they demonstrate true enlightenment, freedom, and what we heretofore falsely touted as national respect for freedom.
Following Horowitz’s thinking, we learn that the actual fight against traditional marriage was waged, not primarily in the courtroom, but in the indoctrination centers otherwise known as American universities. There, Leftists were able to train generations to detest their parents’ worldview, morals, and patriotism. These are now the enlightened who applaud the demise of our culture.
There are two Rules for Resistance that must be employed in this particular battle.
The first is to fill the vacuum of Leftist nihilism with the culture of family. At the end of Radical Son, David Horowitz expressed his discovery of the value of nurturing families, our broken, imperfect, non-utopian human families. Every child, every family fills the “nothing” that is all the Left has to offer.
The second Rule for Resistance is to take the fight to the epicenter, the universities. If an army of obnoxious anti-Western professors festers in the seemingly impenetrable citadel of Academia, then that is where we need to take the fight. Unabashed respect for our Western values and their historical manifestation need to be brought into the university, first by well-formed students, then by conservative professors. The power of the Leftist culture lies in the illusion of its undisputed veracity.
This illusion needs to be shattered on our campuses.
